Description
Want to discover the history of the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy?
This 1954 Norton International Clubman is an exceptionally rare machine with considerable historical value. Only three examples were built by Norton Motorcycles to the full Clubman-specification for the Clubman class, to contest the Isle of Man TT that year.
Ridden by Geoff Tanner in the 1954 Junior Clubmans TT, it put in a remarkable performance by finishing fifth against a strong field, including the BSA Gold Star. Tanner delivered an outstanding ride, taking fifth overall with an average speed of 131. 2 km/ h and a lap at 133. 6 km/ h—an international 350cc benchmark. That performance was a turning point in Tanner’s career, as he would go on to enjoy further success the following year on the legendary Norton Manx, winning the Manx Junior and Senior Grands Prix.
This rare Norton International Clubman still retains all its matching serial numbers, including its rare numbered close-ratio gearbox.
Restored 16 years ago by Bernie Allen—well-known Norton restorer in the UK—the Clubman has been ridden very little since and now presents in exceptional condition. Its story is perfectly documented, with period photographs of Geoff Tanner in action, contemporary press cuttings, and a more recent feature in Classic Rider magazine celebrating Geoff Tanner’s reunion with the very machine he rode following its restoration. In addition, a copy of the Norton factory archive documents, supplied by the VMCC, is included.
Key point: the Clubman is still set up for racing with a Manx piston, Manx camshafts, an Amal TT carburettor, Lucas Racing magneto, and its original close-ratio gearbox. The original Dunlop chrome-rimmed wheels are also still there.
By virtue of its rarity, well-documented racing history and preserved authenticity, this Norton International Clubman is a genuinely special collector’s piece of British motorcycling heritage.
