Collectors and investors should keep the following in mind:
When it comes to the Shelby Cobra (replica), the conformity of the French registration document with what the vehicle really is (manufacturer, year, model, engine) is paramount; to safeguard your purchase.
French legislation (FFVE) is very strict regarding replicas: a replica in order to receive a “Collection” registration in France must be over 30 years old (date of manufacture), must no longer be in production, and must be in its original condition.
Applying this rule imposed since 2014 by the French government and the FFVE, very, very few replicas are admissible in France.
A prudent buyer, therefore, should question the true legality of Cobras with registration documents dated 1965 or 1966…67 (unless that Cobra costs 2 million and is therefore a genuine original Shelby Cobra).
Likewise, if a Cobra from a modern replica maker which began production in 1995 or 2000 is for sale with a registration dated 1974, 1982 or 1986… these modern Cobra replicas are to be avoided as their registration documents are fraudulent.
Generally speaking, Cobra replicas with normal registrations are to be avoided because, in 99% of cases, a replica lacks a European conformity certificate, nor a French one (except for fakes)… and therefore must undergo an Isolated Title Reception (RTI) with the French mining service (UTAC & DREAL)… but these authorities do not issue them.
This is why it is almost certain that a Cobra with a normal registration has fraudulent papers.
Note that the French government has recently launched an anti-fraud campaign against “fake” registration documents. Cancellations of registrations and heavy penalties are currently happening.
