Introduced in 1959, the MG A 1600 is the most developed evolution of the first generation of MG A. It succeeds the MG A 1500, taking over its elegant lines while benefiting from technical improvements aimed at boosting both performance and safety. Evolutions
The main change for the 1600 version lies under the bonnet. It receives a 1, 588 cc four-cylinder engine developing around 80 hp. More powerful than the unit fitted to the 1500, this motor offers stronger acceleration and enables the MG A to reach a top speed close to 160 km/ h. Paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, it delivers an enjoyable, lively driving experience. Thanks to its modest weight and well-balanced chassis, the MG A 1600 offers particularly pleasant road manners. Today, it remains one of the most accessible and best-loved classic cars for touring and tourist rallies.
Safety improvements
The MG A 1600 also benefits from a major safety update. It adopts front disc brakes—modern technology for the time—which significantly improves braking efficiency.
Production
Built from 1959 to 1961, the MG A 1600 was manufactured in 28, 730 examples, in roadster form. And only 5, 062 were therefore distributed around the rest of the world—so how many were in France?
Its commercial success helped to raise MG’s international profile, particularly in the North American market. Today, the MG A 1600 is sought after for its elegance, mechanical simplicity and sheer driving enjoyment. History of this MG A 1600
Delivered new in Paris on 5 November 1959, and owned by just three people!
Mr Scolot in 1959, then sold to his second owner in July 1967, Mr Odenbach.
Then in 2008, its third—and current—owner acquired it.
So we are looking at a rare French-origin MG A with an impeccable, fully documented history from the time it entered circulation, having had only three owners.
Bodywork
Overall, the body is sound. The car was only repainted very partially in 1967. Only the rear section of the lower sills might need attention in the future. The paintwork still presents beautifully and retains a remarkable shine despite 59 years of preservation. Door and panel alignment is excellent. The hinges show no play—an especially telling feature of a car that has never been badly repaired or bodged. The bumpers were replaced in 2008 when purchased by the current owner. The rest of the chrome is in very fine condition.
Interior / Upholstery
The cabin has kept most of its original look, with its black leather upholstery and period piping/ trim. Only the carpets were replaced when it was acquired by the current owner. The car still has its original hood (soft top) as well as its period side-screens—an increasingly rare set-up to find. The whole car reflects a level of upkeep and a conservation mindset that are far from common.
Engine and gearbox
Always carefully maintained despite the low mileage covered, this MG A offers exemplary operation. The engine shows excellent oil pressure, including when hot. The radiator was replaced recently. The gearbox works properly and the gears engage without any difficulty. The clutch release components (release bearing and master/ slave—depending on configuration) were replaced in 2012.
Running gear and braking
The suspension and braking system have benefited from regular attention throughout the life of the car. The steering box has no play, which is sufficiently uncommon on an MG A to be highlighted. The Vredestein tyres were replaced in 2017. Today, the car presents healthy, precise and particularly enjoyable road behaviour.
