The MK2 Ford Escort, unlike the MK1, was a joint development project between Ford UK and Ford of Germany. Codenamed ‘Brenda’ the MK2 used the same mechanical components as its predecessor but featured a new square appearance.
The MK2 Escort was available in a wide variety of engine and trim specifications. L, GL, Sport and Popular to name just a few. Like the MK1, the MK2 Escort was a multinational car with production taking place across several continents.
Performance models of the MK2 Escort were plentiful in the range with all of the MK1 variants being continued on the MK2 platform, though the Mexico gained ‘RS’ badging and a 1.6 Litre version of the Pinto engine.
A new model was added into the range for the Mk2, the RS1800 featuring a Cosworth BDE engine. BDE standing for ‘Belt Drive, Type E’ it was essentially created purely for Ford’s rallying efforts, something the Escort moniker had become synonymous with. The works competition RS1800s were particularly well-built cars, bodyshells were heavily strengthened and were characterised by wide wheel arch extensions and spotlights for use on night stages.
The works cars utilised a 2.0L BDG Cosworth engine which was capable of 250bhp complemented with a 5-speed straight cut gearbox and modified suspension. The RS1800 was hugely competitive in competition, winning every year at the RAC Rally from 1975-1979 at the hands of Rally legends, Björn Waldegård, Hannu Mikkola and Ari Vatanen.
The RS2000 model came with a distinctive polyurethane droop-snoot nose cone and four headlamp fascia featured a 2.0 litre pinto engine from the Cortina, it made a claimed 110bhp and a claimed top speed of 110mph.
The RS2000 shot to fame when it was featured as the car of choice for Fictional CI5 detective Ray Doyle. Doyle drove a white RS2000 in the popular TV series ‘The Professionals’, the white RS2000 in question (PNO641T) was modified for use in the program with a sunroof and a vinyl top to aid the filming process.
