The Appeal
The Sunbeam Alpine Harrington Le Mans is among the rarest derivatives of the Rootes Group's elegant sports car, featuring the distinctive Harrington fastback coachwork that transformed the Alpine's profile and improved its aerodynamics. Any surviving example commands attention, and this one arrives with a story to match.
Previously registered as '2EGG', this well-known car has a documented competition pedigree. An extensive history file records its rallying career in the hands of John Melvin, including entries in the 1962 Scottish Rally and the RAC Rally. It was later purchased by George McWaters in the 1970s, who undertook a restoration in forest green with biscuit trim. During that rebuild, an uprated 2.0-litre engine with twin 40 Weber carburettors and uprated brakes were fitted, giving the car a purposeful mechanical specification to complement its competition heritage.
Now many years on from that restoration, the car presents well and wears its patina with character. The underside is described as solid and clean, and the biscuit interior with green piping remains in tidy order. The current owner purchased the car in August 2025 with ambitions for club and navigation rallying, but ongoing health issues mean it must now pass to a custodian who can make the most of its notable history.image.png1.72 MB
