The Appeal
When it comes to iconic silhouettes, it's undeniable that Mercedes-Benz mastered it early. The W113 - widely known as the 'Pagoda' - is arguably one of the most attractive cars that the marque ever built. Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi created a remarkable little roadster, with subtle curves, a unique concave roof and a pair of big Bosch fishbowl lights framing the eye-catching three-pointed star. Factor in the sweet-running straight-six and you've got an utterly winning roadster - the sort of car that quickly found itself cemented into pop culture and remains one of the most praised cars in the marque's long, proud repertoire.
This particular 1968 example comes to market in a striking grey-over-black - and what a looker it is! The bodywork is strikingly well-kept, as is the brightly contrasting brightwork. Inside, the hard-wearing MB-Tex upholstery looks in great order - and even a new carpet set in the correct black square-weave pattern is sitting in the cabin. The original Becker Europa radio is also retained.
Having resided in dry storage as part of a small private collection, the vendor notes that some mechanical recommissioning may be required should the next custodian wish to return the car to regular road use. The W113's gentle, curvaceous shapes are the makings of a truly beautiful car. From top to bottom, the car is loaded with subtle curves, fins and, of course, that ever-recognisable Pagoda top. This example is picked out in a striking dark grey that adds an imposing edge, and is a fabulous looker - accented and framed by attractive, brightly-kept chromework.
The cabin is also a handsome place for driver and passenger alike - with the MB-Tex upholstery all present and correct, and the wooden veneers in excellent order, both having been believed to be subject to restoration earlier in the car's life. Having been part of a much-loved collection - which has been kept in dry storage - this W113 hasn't been in use for quite some time, and while it is still startling and idling when brought up to temperature, some recommissioning may be necessary before the car can enter full-time use on the road. The engine bay is nicely kept and the car reported to be mechanically standard.
