The Appeal

Hell-bent on racing, Enzo Ferrari faced a problem with homologating his V6 engine for Formula 2. As of 1967, the FIA ruled F2 engines could have no more than six cylinders and had to be derived from a production car - meaning at least five hundred examples of this car had to be produced within twelve months. Maranello had neither the facilities nor the funds to satisfy these requirements so Enzo turned to Italian automotive giant Fiat for help. It was agreed Fiat would build the engines and the car, which would bear the name ‘Dino’ in homage to Ferrari’s deceased son who is credited with the engine’s concept.
While the Fiat Dino Coupé was designed and bodied by Bertone, a Spider variant was also commissioned and this was produced by Pininfarina. Here we have one of the 1,163 2.0-litre Spiders made, dating from 1970. Enthusiasts covet these 2.0-litre versions as unlike the 2.4 that followed, they feature an all-alloy engine block which makes for a more responsive engine.
Having undergone recent refurbishment, this Dino presents very well. The vendor reports that it drives beautifully and is in immensely good condition throughout. It’s accompanied by a sizeable paperwork file and has a well-documented history. For discerning collectors with a penchant for classic Italian convertibles, this Dino is a must-have.

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally supplied to the United States in left-hand drive
  • Arrived in the Netherlands in 1990 where it had two registered keepers
  • The car then spent sixteen years in the ownership of an Irish collector
  • Imported to France in 2020 which is when the current keeper purchased it
  • Historic Carte Grise
  • US Title (California) along with registration docs from Ireland and the Netherlands
  • Numerous invoices for parts and servicing
  • The odometer currently displays 86,989 km
  • Dino 2000 Spider no. 1144

The Condition

  • Centre-locking wheels in smart condition
  • Folding roof in good visual order
  • The bodywork looks to be straight and solid following recent refurbishment and the paint presents well
  • No notable deterioration evident to the chrome trim
  • The badging, glass and lights appear in good order
  • The interior looks to be very original and free from excessive wear
  • Modern DIN stereo fitted
  • Smart luggage compartment, complete with a hammer for wheel spinner removal and a fire extinguisher
Having been subject to recent refurbishment, this Fiat presents very well, with straight-looking bodywork, a smart interior and gleaming red paintwork. The folding hood appears in good order with no heavy fogging to the rear window and the vendor demonstrates that it folds away neatly. Our attention is drawn to the centre-locking wheels which are a feature of these 2.0-litre cars, making them very desirable.
The vendor comments that there are no signs of corrosion and indeed this car appears to be in very sound condition, ready for its next custodian.

The Mechanics

  • 2.0-litre all-alloy V6
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Desirable aluminium alloy engine engine block
  • Engine rebuild reportedly carried out at around 69,000 kilometres
With an engine Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari, Vittorio Jano and Aurelio Lampredi all had a hand in designing, this V6 is very special and is the very reason this car was commissioned in the first place.
All presents well under the bonnet and having undergone an engine rebuild at around 69,000 kilometres, we understand that this is a very fit example. The vendor states that the engine starts very easily and runs without any apparent issues or leaks. The Dino is reportedly fantastic fun to drive and ready to be enjoyed.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
