The Appeal
Where did they all go? In the late 80s and early 90s, Vauxhall’s Mk3 Cavalier was a massive sales success, notching up over 700,000 sales and regularly outselling Ford’s Sierra. With good reason, because the Luton lovely was the sophisticated FWD alternative to the old-fashioned RWD Ford.
And yet, today, only a few hundred Mk3 Cavvies survive, the majority seemingly succumbing to the ignominious scrap yard fate of most family saloons. That makes this 1991 1.6GL rarer than many Italian exotica and, dare we say it, in many ways much more evocative. Because surely few cars nudge the nostalgia gene quite like a 35-year-old four-door hatchback.
The vendor acquired this tidy light blue hatchback in 2024 and tells us that he has serviced it and rectified a few minor issues, such as a wheel bearing and coil spring. He has also fitted the natty four-spoke ‘CD’ alloys. It is a very low-mileage car that we’re told remained in the same family for many years. It is well kept, with a few points to note in photos. The long MOT support the sense of a solid and sorted saloon. Definitely one for the enthusiast who prefers their cars to be ‘real’ rather than ‘rarified.’ Although this survivor can lay claim to both.
The vendor says:
“I love driving this vehicle as it always makes me smile, it's fun to drive and turns heads as it's a true icon of the 90s and its interior, I love the smooth gear changes and the sound of the engine and the road handling.”
