The Appeal
After burning the midnight oil engineering a series of exquisitely-wrought saloons in the 80s and 90s, perhaps Mercedes’ engineers deserved to wig out a bit. That can be the only explanation for this car, the original E55 super saloon. Successive E55s would be more powerful, but it was this car, the W201, that set the template for an utterly bonkers tyre-smoking saloon that was entertaining in a way that its rivals simply forgot to be.
The heart of the W201 E55 is AMG’s hand-built engine, based on Mercedes’ rumbling 5.4L M113 V8. It’s good for 350bhp, all mixed with the sort of luxury you expect from a high-end E-Class flagship. Classically painted in Brilliant Silver with a black leather cabin, this 2000 car is the kind you want to find - a factory standard, well kept saloon with plenty of evidence of investment by previous keepers.
The current one acquired it in late 2024. Invoices show that he hasn’t skimped on maintenance, expending over £4,000 on engine work including a timing chain. That has built on the attention of previous keepers which is shown in photos and detailed below. There is a run of servicing up to November 2025 to support the mileage. We’re told that the car recently completed a trip to Le Mans Classic without fault. The MOT runs to March 2027 with a few minor points to note.
The vendor says:
“Mechanically the car is great. The engine work carried out late 2025 means it is running perfect. Car has been decatted. Air con compressor needs replacing. Rear springs are a bit squeaky at the moment (advisory on the MOT). Could do with a wheel balance, slight vibration at 55mph.
“Finally, how would you summarise the vehicle? Car is great to drive and has been great to own. It's very comfortable, sounds amazing and can cover miles effortlessly with bags of torque. We took it to Le Mans 24 in 2025 and it performed faultlessly. Gets lots of attention and oozes kerb side appeal.Very rare car, unlikely to see another on the road.”
