We are delighted to present for sale this Automatic Land Rover® 90 which has been rebuilt by us in stunning Merlin Purple. It has been constructed to the highest specification, as it was built specifically for a member of our team who is now unable to keep it due to a recent house purchase.
This vehicle initially arrived at our premises as a low-mileage 90, in good condition. We elected to retain and rebuild it as it was a rare automatic – the intended recipient for the build only has an automatic license so this vehicle created an ideal way into owning and running a 90. If you are in the position where you need an automatic, either for comfort or because you have a bad knee or similar, then this would be the ideal vehicle. As it was designed for one of our in-house members, it was constructed with the brief that it should last for as long as possible, whilst being good to look at, nice to use with the best spec possible. It was also chosen because it has no electronics or computers, and therefore is, in our opinion, a far superior vehicle to own and run long term over a more recent vehicle with complicated and troublesome electrics….. one of our team ran a TD5 and at around 120, 000 miles, it became so troublesome electrically that it had to go. Another of our team runs a 300TDI 90, and they intend to keep that forever… that vehicle has covered over 150, 000 miles and is completely reliable. This vehicle is of a similar vein but has a lower mileage of 91, 879 miles.
Externally, the vehicle is painted in Audi Merlin Purple, with Gloss Black Detailing. Many additions have been made – the Daytime running lights in the front bumper, rally spec front grill, LED headlights, puma bonnet and sawtooth alloys – to name a few. The vehicle sits on a new set of BF Goodrich All-terrain tyres – these are the best cross climate tyre available and give an unrivalled compromise between on & off road use. There is a towball and electrics to allow towing, and a North-America Spec step is fitted for access to the rear – this has been galvanised and then powder coated so it won’t rust away! The gloss black roof adds the finishing touches to the look…. we think this is one of the most striking 90s to look at we’ve ever seen. Brand new Side steps are fitted for easier access to the cabin. Obviously, there is no use in a vehicle ‘looking’ good if changes have not been made to allow the vehicle to live a longer life. The doors are brand new items and the frames have been galvanised so that they won’t suffer as so many do at this age. The chassis is of course a brand new galvanised item, but more importantly the bulkhead has also been galvanised to eliminate any future corrosion issues. Where possible, items have been galvanised to help further with this – one does not have to be a mechanic to see the standard of this build… many new parts have been fitted, such as the suspension, brakes, brake lines etc etc. To finish off the look, the vehicle has been tinted to keep the interior cooler in the summer, and to afford a degree of privacy.
The interior is detailed to the same standard – there are a pair of heated front seats (XS Half Leather) with centre cubby-box with cupholders. Deluxe carpeting and sound-deadening is fitted throughout the interior. The headliner is full XS Alcantara, and is new. The rear has a pair of forward facing rear seats fitted – this is rarely seen in 90s of this age due to the square wheel arches, so this is great to see. A bulkhead removal bar has been fitted to give more cabin space, to accomodate a larger driver and to give easy access to the rear for stowing items. The steering wheel is the XS variant, covered with leather. A bluetooth stereo with hands-free calling has been fitted. This is a very useful addition and means calls can be taken whilst driving – or music from your playlist can be played – or using Google Maps on your phone you can have voice commands for satellite navigation. The heated seats and front window make this vehicle ideal in cold weather and bad winters.
The main place where this 90 shines through is out on the road – the automatic box, power steering and disc brakes make this vehicle drive like a new 90. The 300TDI engine pushes the vehicle along with plenty of pace and the automatic transmission shifts seamlessly, probably due to being of low mileage for the age. The engine has been treated to a set of silicon turbo hoses and is fitted with the correct intercooler to give the best power response possible. The vehicle sits an inch lower than standard as we have found that this gives a far more compliant ride with better handling.
In summary, if you are looking for an automatic Land Rover® 90, rebuilt onto a Galvanised Chassis, then this could be for you. This 90 is a real head turner, and when taking it out for test and fuel, it attracted many comments and compliments. Included with this vehicle is a substantial history file, and photos were taken throughout the course of the build so the new customer can appreciate just what they are buying. We believe that this Defender is far superior than a brand new vehicle ‘off the line’ as we have resolved the inherent issues these vehicles come with. At the price requested, we believe it represents excellent value for money – of course it is now not possible to buy a new 90, let alone one which looks and performs like this and we expect it to sell very quickly.
