In 1963, De Tomaso had a tie-up with Ford in respect of engines for the new Vallelunga sports car. The engines supplied by Ford were the 1500cc pre-crossflow GT engine which produced 85 bhp. De Tomaso tuned these engines to give 105bhp at 6, 500 rpm by adding carburettors and cam.
Alongside the new Vallelunga, De Tomaso produced a limited number of Cortina GT’s in Mk1 and Mk2 bodies. The same engine was used and an estimated 130kmh was quoted for these Cortina GT De Tomaso’s. Only 3 Mk1’s and 5 Mk2’s out of a total of 8 cars are thought to have been produced. Supplied direct from De Tomaso, they can be distinguished by their twin 40 DCOE carburettors, electronic fuel pump and manual cut-out mounted on the engine bulkhead. Various other indications are obvious from the Recaro seats, wheels, badging, and suspension.
This particular car was supplied originally in Italy, and then spent most of it’s life in a single passionate family ownership in the South of France passing from father to son and from where it was found early this year. It had a full engine rebuild 5, 000kms ago, and had had a re-spray some ten years ago. It has been garaged all of it’s life.
Identifying features apart from the obvious badging and steering wheel are the engine modifications, Italian markings on windscreen and Recaro seats, wheels, fuel pump, manual engine cut out. Whilst there is little recorded information on these very rare cars, continental publication often make reference to them. Below are two pictures, one of a Mk1 De Tomaso and the second of the engine bay in one of the later Mk2’s with the tell-tale fuel pump is clearly visible above the coil.
Offered here is a very rare Ford Cortina 1500 GT De Tomaso . These cars were only made for the Italian market and in very small numbers. This stunning example had extensive mechanical restoration about 10 years ago and has basically had no use since.
This example is very sound bodily, with a very smart interior and good mechanically .
