Following on from the success of the Mustang in America, Ford’s European arm developed its own personal sports coupe in the late 1960s, unveiling the new Capri at the 1969 Brussels Motor Show. Production began two months earlier, both in Cologne, Germany and Halewood in the UK, albeit with very different hearts; the German cars powered by a range of V-formation motors, while the English 1300 and 1600 counterparts were both of conventional in-line configuration. Although the Capri was designed as a GT, it was developed into a successful rally car and ultimately a formidable track weapon. The flagship of the Capri range was the powerful 3000GT model, made available to Australian buyers from February 1970. Local 3. 0 litre Capris were considerably dressed up with sidewinder stripes, ‘Super Roo’ decals lifted from the XW Falcon GT, bonnet locking pins and Rostyle pressed steel wheels. A four-speed manual gearbox was standard equipment but, to broaden the Capri’s appeal, Ford also offered a Borg-Warner three-speed automatic. Ford improved the Capri’s unsupportive front seats mid-way through production with high-backed buckets. Regarded as one of the quickest cars available in the early 1970s and a competitor for Holden’s hottest Toranas, the V6 Capri did the 0-100 km/ h dash in 10. 2 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 16. 8 seconds. Roughly 3, 000 V6 Capris were sold in Australia between 1971 and 1973, all made from Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits assembled at Ford’s Homebush facility in Sydney but few remain in decent condition today, most having been driven into the ground long ago.

Finished in the rarely seen Lime Glaze, a hero colour more often associated with Ford’s new XA Falcon/ Fairmont range, and equipped with the desirable manual gearbox, this lovely 3. 0 V6 Capri was purchased new from Thompson Ford of Parramatta, NSW by local pharmacist Graham Gard in May 1973. Gard cherished his new car for the next 27 years, keeping it garaged and well maintained in that time. The second owner was a gentleman from Armadale in the Northern Tablelands region of NSW, who refurbished the Capri to the current cosmetic and mechanical condition approximately ten years ago, including repainting it in the original colour, retrimming the seats and generally tidying the car up. The Capri became a fixture at local car shows around the district for some years before changing hands again last year – just the second time in 47 years it had been sold. The current owner is a long-time car enthusiast from the Sydney suburb of St Ives, who had been searching for an RS3100 V6 for some time but was unable to resist this 3. 0 V6’s combination of originality and condition when it became available. Our vendor’s dream to own an RS3100 was finally fulfilled earlier this year so the 3. 0 V6 is reluctantly being offered for sale to make garage space. A major service was carried out last year, including replacing the rear brake drums, adjusting the throttle and overhauling the carburettor. Sadly the original books were lost some time ago but the vendor has copies of old registration papers dating back to the early 1980s and has the contact details of both prior owners to confirm the history above. Currently registered on non-transferable historic plates in NSW, the Ford will therefore be sold unregistered.
