Description
t’s a fact that well respected car manufacturers assumed that by developing the design of their initial models they enhanced sales potential. If current prices are a guide then they appear to have underestimated the market. Originality & rarity appearing to take precedence over perceived looks! Not everyone will agree – and reasons vary from age, reliability, cost etc…. – however, current prices remain a formidable benchmark. The original Austin / Morris Mini being a case in point – with early Mk1 variants currently valued well in excess of later models.
Royston’s original RHD Home Market Cooper 'S' – was built in September 1966 & sold by Moir & Baxter Ltd of Edinburgh. Finished in its original colour of Almond Green coachwork with an Old English White roof – combined with Porcelain Green upholstery & Dove Grey inserts. It was also fitted from new with a heater, an auxiliary fuel tank & an oil cooler, and currently retains its original 1275cc engine and registration number FFG 927D.
The car was extensively restored some 20 years ago - utilising a new bodyshell – as were many - & fitted with new period reclining seats. A further restoration carried out in 2018 – at a cost of some £10k – included new floor pans & sills to both sides, brake system overhaul, new water pump, radiator& hoses. A British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate is on file confirming its original factory specification.
Post Royston's acquisition, we have fitted a new carpet set & a period Moto Lita steering wheel, replaced worn ball joints, uj's, heater valve, head gasket, new choke cable & many other fiddlies culminating in a new 12 month MOT for that mechanical peace of mind!
Therefore, this is a very well presented & reliable car – having been well looked after by it’s prior custodians over a 55 year life span & would be seen as a rarity on today’s roads or fit equally well in a eclectic collection.
