At Quick and Big Ltd are absolutely delighted to offer for sale a unique, comprehensively restored, subtly modernised, beautifully presented, 1971, Ferrari engined, Fiat Dino 2400cc Coupe.
The history of the Fiat Dino model is fascinating: Dino was the nickname of Enzo Ferrari’s son, Alfredo, who passed away aged 26 in 1956. In his memory, the “Dino” name lived on, in the form of various Ferrari cars from the late 1950’s to the late 1970’s. ”Dino” was the name used for the V6-engined Ferrari race cars, the later V6 mid-engined Ferrari road cars, the legendary Lancia Stratos and of course the Fiat Dino Coupe and Spider.
Alfredo Ferrari was credited with creating the concept behind Ferraris V6 race engine. In order to produce the engines in sufficient numbers required by the F. I. A. for the Ferrari “Dino” V6 to be homologated for use in its Formula 2 race cars, Ferrari (as a low volume manufacturer) partnered with Fiat to produce the Dino V6’s.
During the course of its use as a road car engine, the Dino V6’s capacity increased from 2. 0 litres to 2. 4 litres; our beautiful Dino is the later, rarer and more desirable 2400cc model. As a later car, unlike the earlier cars which were assembled by Fiat, ours was assembled by Ferrari at Maranello.
The Fiat Dino Coupe was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time at Bertone and introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1967. It was significantly updated with the introduction of the Dino 2400, launched at the Turin Motor Show in 1969. To compliment the increase in engine capacity, a new dog-leg, 5 speed ZF gearbox and independent rear suspension along with numerous styling changes were introduced. Only 2550 Dino 2400 Coupes were produced between 1969 and 1973 and, according to How Many Left, only 31 are currently registered in the UK.
The Dino 2400’s Ferrari derived quad cam engine was said to develop 178bhp at 6600rpm / 216Nm of torque at 4600rpm (compared to the earlier cars 158bhp / 163Nm), propelling the lightweight Dino (only 1270kg) to 60mph in around 8 seconds and on to 130mph. Hugely impressive for a GT car that’s now over 50 years old.
A quick online search confirms the Dino as a sure fire modern classic and potential investment, a few quotes are below:
Classic Trader describe the Dino as “The Thinking Man’s Ferrari”.
Auto Express exclaimed, “very few cars give off the same air of class as the Fiat Dino Coupe”.
Classic Driver states, “If you want to drive a Ferrari, buy a Fiat Dino.”
Our particular example is magazine featured too, being the subject of a 5-page feature in Auto Italia Magazine, a copy of which accompanies our car.
There are many reasons that the Fiat Dino’s are appreciating in value, particularly the later, more desirable 2400 variants, not least that the Ferrari and Lancia models that feature the exact same Dino V6 are now commanding stratospheric prices of £200k plus. The Dino still represents outstanding value for money (but for how long), so much car and class for the money!
A contemporary Fiat Dino starred as the Mafia car in the 1969 movie “The Italian Job”, our Dino can be had for less than it would cost to buy a restored contemporary Mini Cooper S, also featured in the film. Being from the movie, it also qualifies for the annual “Italian Job” European rally, just google "Italian Job".
DVK 338J is a very special car, having been imported direct from a respected Dino expert in San Pellegrino, Italy, by its only UK owner back in 2011.
The Dino’s perfectionist new enthusiast owner then set about a nut and bolt restoration and improvement. Including bare metal respray, full engine rebuild, including the addition of electronic fuel injection (the original Weber carbs will accompany the car). It may be the only fuel injected Dino on the planet, its high revving V6 still sounds awesome, but drives much more like a modern car, and is therefore a much more usable classic. Its last owner has used the Dino for a number of European road trips without incident.
Our Dino is presented in beautiful condition, having been recently re-spayed in its original metallic Silverstone Grey by prize winning Classic Car Specialists – Bushell’s Restorations. Its interior was also retrimmed as part of its renovation in correct period Fiat Red leather. Our Dino has covered an indicated 91492 km, (56850 miles), in its 50 year existence, and is correctly registered as a “historic vehicle” and as such is MOT exempt and free of road tax.
During the Dino’s 6-year labour of love restoration, tens of thousands of pounds has been spent on parts alone, its enthusiastic owner has asked me not to add up the total amount from the file of receipts for his own peace of mind, not to mention the many hundreds of hours of skilled labour!
Our Ferrari engined classic’s restoration and improvements have been extensive and, talking to the previous owners wife, exhaustive! It includes:
Disassembly, replacement rear quarters and front arches.
Bare metal respray in original metallic Silverstone Grey, (Fiat number 661, still a current Ferrari colour).
Dinitrol treated (lots of it, inside panel cavities etc).
Rear trailing arms, strengthening plates added under seats.
Nut and bolt rebuild.
Engine rebuild from Crank upwards, including new Pistons, Valves, Valve Springs, Seals, Water Pump and more. Specialist help from the late Phil Stafford at Rosneath Engineering, and Gary Bailey at Bailey and Liddle.
Gearbox rebuild by Wayne Lee at Motorsport Transmissions, including fitting of the desirable “long” fifth gear.
Programmable Fuel Injection system, including Weber Pico injectors, Jenvey Throttle Bodies with same “footprint” as the original Weber carbs, and Canems programmable ECU. This system, together with thermostatically controlled Oil Cooler and twin Cooling Fans, plus uprated Starter Motor, Alternator and Brake Vacuum Pump, was fitted without drilling the engine, and uses existing apertures for all external sensors, so it could be returned to factory spec. if desired.
Rolling road set up, dyno from AtSpeed Racing – Southend. (178 bhp at 6600 rpm/ 220Nm from 3500 rpm), mirroring the manufacturers quoted BHP and improving the torque figures from 50 years earlier! (Dyno read-out accompanies the car).
Stainless steel exhaust, including manifolds.
Fuel tank restoration (inside and out), Bosch 044 external fuel pump.
Brakes and all suspension / engine mounts and Silentbloc bushes replacement.
Full interior re-trim in Fiat Red leather, to match original door cards.
Period custom built Retro Sound modern hi-fi system, including Blue Tooth connectivity.
LED light upgrade throughout (excluding head lights) including new lenses.
The list goes on and on, the best way to understand how comprehensive the restoration and improvements has been is to come and view our classic Dino.
Our Fiat Dino 2400 comes complete with 6-inch thick A4 folders of receipts and information, including:
A copy of its original Italian registration document from 23rd September 1971.
Nova document and UK registration document.
Original copy of the Fiat Dino 2400 Specifications and Features workshop manual.
Literally hundreds of receipts charting the cars restoration and improvement.
Lots of useful documentation, including wiring diagrams, etc.
A memory stick containing hundreds of photographs, documents, diagrams, manuals etc providing a fascinating pictorial record of the Dino’s comprehensive restoration and a valuable resource of information for ongoing maintenance. .
A copy of Auto Italia Magazine (Feb18) including the feature on the car.
Dino 2400 Coupe Owner’s Manual. (Rare original, not a copy).
In short many, many happy hours of bed time reading! And importantly all the providence to substantiate our claim that our Dino is certainly unique, and probably the best in the UK.
Whilst it’s MOT exempt we will of course put a fresh MOT on it for the new owners lucky benefit. It will also have a 90+ point independent pre-delivery inspection prior to collection or delivery.
Our classic Ferrari-engined Dino comes with a number of valuable spares including:
Original Cromodora wheels.
Original Weber Carburettors, air box, distributer, cooling fan and jack.
Its reproduction period 14 inch Campagnolo wheels, (a factory option when new), are shod with recent matching Blockley radials.
It is of course HPI clear and a full HPI report will be available to potential purchasers.
Many thanks for wading through our lengthy description, we believe it’s better to describe our cars fully. It is not in our interest to waste your time or ours with inaccurate descriptions. It does of course have the odd age related imperfection (which used car doesn’t), but our Dino is an absolute credit to its enthusiast owner, for its age it really is beautiful.
Our Fiat Dino 2400, really does tick all the Quick and Big Ltd boxes, being great value, appreciating in value, quick, gloriously presented, super rare and as a result of all the huge efforts and expenditure of its recent enthusiast owner its ready to enjoy, be admired and potentially show prize winning.
