Full body and engine resto
A very rare original Sundial Camper
Engine is 1600 cc twin port. Top end engine rebuild 2019. Retains the original 1600 cc barrels, (Honed) and pistons ( removed and cleaned) , Total oil saver ring kit, brand new VW German twin port heads- with copper bushed plug threads. This is to add life to the heads as they are aluminium and the treads are prone to stripping when changing the plugs.
Last year I have done the following so prospective owner has peace of mind
Fully stripped and refurbished 34 Pict carb (ultrasonic clean), all new parts.
New plugs, leads
New Dizzy, (electronic),
fuel lines,
fuel filter,
Oil cooler seal,
Hela starter 12v motor
New 12v fly wheel
New heavy duty Clutch lever arm and push rod assembly
New Clutch cable
New accelerator cable and pedal linkage
New Exhaust
New CV boots
New brake flexi's
4 New tyres
Servo brake kit fitted .(£1800)
Engine tune (tappets adjusted) and engine timed with the electronic vacuum dizzy in place.
In 2017 I had the wiring harness replaced by a Wolfsburg west full loom at Knighton classics, and Electronic ignition installed- so no more points, Brand new alternator and led brake lights, indicators and halogen head light, bulbs
When I bought the van in 2007 I set about a full body restoration.
I took it to a guy in west wales who specialises in vintage car restorations. He is also an ex VW aircooled dealer mechanic. He had the bus in his workshop for 4 months. I have a photo album of the resto. Turned into a full blown rebuild, as these things go. The restoration is as good today as when it left his workshop. That is not a throwaway comment.

The resto is still 100 percent in tact - zero rust. A testament to Alan Bowen in West Wales. You will not need to worry about structural rust. (Photo album of the resto available). The chassis has been steam cleaned and re- dinitrolled every 2 years since the resto.
The edges of the front windows and side window channels could do with a tidy up- but it's a nice to do if you want a show van. The rubbers are water tight and the channels work fine.
Niggles
Blaunpunkt radio has been re-worked to remove the old valves and has an auxillary jack point- It needs switching over to 12 v - There is an internal mechanism to do this but beyond my skills. I have the contact details of the guy who does the conversions- he charges around £30. 0 to switch it over
The wipers still 6V- Not worth the hassle and expense to change.
Fuel gauge doesn't work. It hasn't worked since I bought the van 14 years ago. We keep a note book under the dash and record the miles- Fill up every 200 miles- have never ran out of Petrol
I am getting 28mpg since the engine rebuild- fully loaded for a weekend away- easy cruise at 60mph. I did the VW festival at Alnick this and last year, Brecon to Northumberland. 700 mile round trip. Fully loaded for the weekend and had 2 passengers with me. Ran faultlessly and returned 30 mpg on that run.
A charming old school van retaining its character. Upgraded brakes and electrics which are safe and sensible mods, necessary if you want to use the van for what it was intended for.
I have dropped the price as the van I want has come up
If you want a splitscreen at reasonable money- that is not a basket case- this is the one. BUT IT NOW OR REGRET IT
