Description
For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Lightweight in Drab Olive (1971).
Petrol 2286cc. MOT & Tax Exempt. Early Lightweight – just the 3975th made . Bonnet Mounted Spare. Front & Rear Bumperettes. Bridging Plate. Recent Canvas. Rear Bench Seats. 750 JB4x4 Tyres.
We are delighted to present for sale this Land Rover® Lightweight, which has been the daily driver of one of our Senior Workshop Mechanics, Jonathan Chadwick. “Chad” (as he is affectionately known!) has a real passion for Lightweights – and planned to retain and improve this Lightweight with the idea of keeping it forever – sadly after a few years, due to a change of circumstances, it has to go.
Externally, this has many the period features one expects to see – the vintage numberplates, front and rear bumperettes, bridging plate, bonnet mounted spare, recent canvas and NATO hitch. We think the culmination of these items makes this Lightweight stand really well, and the bodywork is better than many we see too, which is good to see – it has not had ATU or storage boxes drilled into the body, and the paintwork is of the classic military finish. A brand new set of our own 750 wheels and tyres is fitted to give a more relaxed cruise and a better stance.
The interior is largely standard, with two front seats, and deluxe matting to the footwells. The heater is still fitted with front demist, which is handy for those winter mornings – Chad has been very thankful of this to prevent freezing up on the coldest of days. A set of rear bench seats is fitted, with a load mat to the floor area – this Land Rover® has been a real workhorse, and has carried the whole family on a multitude of occasions – not only for the Christmas Tree Run, but also summer trips to the beach, and green-laning at the weekends with the team – often outshining the more modern counterparts in the tough stuff!
Out on the road, this lightweight drives just as she should, aided by the larger rubber to give a more relaxed cruising experience. Chad has driven this car 24 miles a day, 5 days a week – and all he has needed to replace in this time is the Clutch Master Cylinder and Slave. It is not often we can attest to the reliability of a period engined vehicle so strongly – and that is purely because, a 20 mile test run only gives us a snippet into the vehicle – whereas the long-term use of this vehicle means “it has been put through its paces” in a variety of circumstances.
In summary, if you are looking for a Land Rover® Lightweight which can carry the whole family whilst being both MOT & Tax Exempt, as well as benefitting from classic car insurance, then this could be for you. Getting hold of Lightweights is becoming a really tricky task nowadays, especially one so early towards the start of Series 3 production.
