This unique Tickford-modified Mini had not been seen for over 30 years before being purchased by our vendor earlier this year. The vendor advises us that this one-off was a special commission for a Saudi Arabian Prince, who was involved in the oil and gas industry, and that it was built by Aston Martin's famous coachbuilding subsidiary, Tickford. Formerly known as Salmons & Sons, Tickford was based at Newport Pagnell, and after WW2 became increasingly involved in supplying bodies for Lagonda following David Brown's acquisition of both Aston Martin and Lagonda in 1947. Tickford was later contracted to provide bodies for the Aston Martin DB2/ 4 MkII, and in 1954 was added to the David Brown empire; all coachbuilding for other manufacturers ceased.
Ever since its introduction in 1959 the Mini has attracted the attention of specialists dedicated to transforming Alec Issigonis' basic transport into something altogether more sporting and/ or luxurious, two of the best known exponents of the 'luxury Mini' concept being Harold Radford and Wood & Pickett. Being exclusively dedicated to building Aston Martins, Tickford did not seek outside customising work, which is perhaps a measure of the 'clout' this car's Saudi owner had with the factory. The price of the Tickford upgrade was £50, 000, so clearly no expense was spared in the build.
A true 'unicorn' in terms of Mini conversions, the Tickford's signature feature is the stacked headlight arrangement. Additional notable features are the blanked-off grille and the front spoiler creating an imposing and distinctive look. The interior features Recaro seats trimmed in luxurious Aston Martin leather and an Aston Martin burr walnut dashboard. This being the 1980s, it also boasts a Clarion sound system and speakers. It was specified in left-hand drive as the intention was for it to be used in Europe.
The Tickford Register and Aston Martin Heritage Chairman (at time of build), recently visited our vendor to view the Mini, which was the first time either of them had seen it 'in the flesh'. They were kind enough to leave an original Aston Martin build drawing of the car and shared some amazing photographs and stories of the Mini at the Tickford factory. Having covered just 13, 065 Kilometres from new, this is a wonderful opportunity to own unique piece of British automotive heritage.
