Having been involved in the replica speedster market for many years and bought and sold a lot of these cars, I believe this to the best RHD Speedster replica you will ever find… and by quite some margin!
Intermeccanica are based in Canada and are renowned for producing the best replica in the World, but they are also the most expensive. The body they use has perfect shut lines and is beautifully made, their craftsmanship beyond reproach, and their options for customisation are huge.
This particular replica is believed to be 1 of only 4 cars produced in RHD, and to reproduce this car to this spec’ today, would cost in excess of $120k plus shipping, taxes and duty.
Having been through the UK’s IVA process, this car is properly registered as a 2015 Speedster on the V5C, and is also ULEZ compliant.
The car presents beautifully in metallic Silver, with the most luxurious of tan leather interiors, and a navy blue roof and hood cover. The billet alloy wheels are faced with Porsche mini moon discs and the car is Porsche badged throughout. The bumpers feature over-riders and period correct nipple spotlights to the front. The rear lights are of the rarer beehive variety and the engine lid is louvered.
Move to the interior via a remote fob for the central locking and alarm, and you’re greeted by an interior that is very special indeed. The craftsmanship is at another level. Everywhere you look is swathed in exquisite tan leather sat above the correct German Weave carpet. A wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel sits before the dash and dials with a clock to the centre. The ivory controls and knobs continue the theme of quality and superb engineering. Even the colour-matched inertia seatbelts and roof bow have been finished in matching leather, the doors feature leather pouches and the footwells have hard pockets.
This car also holds some modern day surprises.
Under the dash are the controls for the electric windows. Reach to the centre tunnel which has been reshaped to have corners and replicate an original 356, and you’ll see it even has heated seats. On the side of the tunnel next to the chrome Empi gear shifter, there are two hidden billet aluminium cup holders. There’s also a heated windscreen and a heater that blows through beautifully engineered vents in the dashboard, and a stereo that is bluetooth enabled with handsfree telephone and multiple speakers.
The perfect condition roof is a breeze to put up, and the framework is yet another feat of engineering.
Slide into the bucket seat and press the glowing red starter button, and another surprise awaits - this car is powered by a water-cooled Audi 2. 0 TFSi engine. Not only that, but it has been tweaked with the addition of a bigger turbo. Mated to a 4 speed VW gearbox, this thing is quick…. very quick.
On the move, the surprises continue as the car drives like a modern car - it’s compliant, supple yet direct, coming to a quick halt when needed. All of this is enabled by a superior modern day set-up of independent Porsche suspension all round and Porsche brake discs and callipers to the front and back with braided brake lines.
With only 4, 500 warranted miles, this Intermeccanica Speedster will be supplied with a no-advisory MOT until March 2024, a 6-month market-leading extendable warranty, pre-fitted with a Tracker, and will be registered on a registration plate from 1968 to complete the car's look.
This car is destined to make someone very happy - a machine I’ll never be able to replace.
