Description

This is singularly the most stunning car we have owned for a long time! This is a beautiful 1973 Lotus Elan Sprint DHC, UK RHD, Finished in the Perfect combination of Carnival Red over White with Black Interior. She is in an amazing Concours condition, we have simply never seen better, and in addition has covered a genuine 79k Miles from new with the first owner keeping her for 40 years!

Lotus launched a legend in 1962, the new Lotus Elan. Following on from the Elite model the new car offered improved handling, better performance and had a less fragile feel to its overall design. Below the bonnet sat a twin-cam four cylinder engine which would become a legend in its own right, powering other classic Lotus models including of course the Cortina sports-saloons. Initially the Elan came as an open two-seater, then from 1964 a fixed head coupe was also available, both bodies being constructed from GRP and mounted on a separate chassis. In 1967 a new 2+2 joined the range which offered more comfort in a classic GT format. Both models continued to sell well throughout the late-60's with various model changes including a desirable Sprint model and a 2+2 along with more powerful engines.

This particular car is noteworthy in having had only 3 owners from new, the first for 40 years! Purchased new on 30th November 1972 by the first owner from Roger Clarke Cars Ltd, the original bill of sale shows that he put down a mere £20 deposit and agreed to buy the car for £1, 867. Judging by the history file, this car has been treasured by its first owner and was sorely missed as a member of the family. In 1992 it was treated to a new chassis direct from Lotus Cars, part number LR2731, and was fitted by renowned marque specialist Paul Matty. Having covered 79, 250 genuine miles from new, this example is in an amazing condition, she is simply better than new in all areas. The owner was meticulous in every little job carried out since 1972, from mechanical components all the way through to the light fixings, this car has been carefully maintained as the pride and joy of a private collector.

It is very rare to find a standard Elan in this condition, let alone the most desirable Sprint model in the most desirable colours, with such impeccable provenance. Finished in the most appropriate Gold Leaf colour combination made famous by the Lotus Racing cars of the era. The car comes with a new MOT with no advisories, as you would imagine, and has a nice history file. This exact car sold at auction in 2014, 11 years ago for over £42, 000, which was double the going rate then, and has since had a fortune spent bringing her up to the Concours Level she is now. There cannot be a better example in the market today and at this price, I imagine she will not be here long, she simply must be seen to be believed. This Elan Sprint truly adheres to the Colin Chapman principle of "simplify, then add lightness."
