Descrição
In March 1987, Mercedes launched its w 124 coupé, a derivative of the saloon launched at the end of 1984. The car, already renowned for its robustness, comfort, driving pleasure and high quality of manufacture, added an elegance and exclusivity with the coupé that quickly made this model a real commercial success, despite a price well above the competition.
In the launch advert, the new two-door w 124 was shown in profile, with the windows down (no pillar), and the caption: "Car journalists are going to become art critics"... in all modesty!
An electric arm that automatically moved the seatbelt forward to the height of the driver's and passenger's shoulder during installation was enough to convince even the most difficult of drivers. In the autumn of 1989, the first restyling took place and, in the opinion of the specialists, this was the best generation of w 124s, before the arrival of recycled materials in mid-1993.
This second generation was therefore characterised by a lower body panel set with a chrome bead running all around the car, and door handles fitted with the same equipment. Inside, the leather was much softer and more welcoming than on previous versions, and the woodwork was warmer, even on the side doors.
It was on this occasion that Mercedes equipped its coupes with the new 220 bhp multi-valve engine (300 CE-24) combined with a mechanical reverse first gearbox or a new 5-speed automatic gearbox. This is the version we are offering you today, in a very chic and sober black metallic finish (199) with black leather and burr walnut. It adds to the already comprehensive standard equipment, the electric sunroof, 8-hole alloy wheels, cruise control and headlamp washers (very rare and reminiscent of the 500 E). As an accessory, it was fitted with an Alpine radio cd and original velour carpets when it was delivered to the Le Mans dealership in February 1990.
The interior of the car is in a condition that can be described, without any exaggeration, as "comparable to new". The bodywork was given a complete overhaul a few years ago and today shows no notable defects, dents or scratches.
Mechanically, it is at the same level as aesthetically. The car has its COMPLETE MAINTENANCE CARNET, rigorously stamped until 2006, when it was driven very little. In 2024 it was completely overhauled (oil change, filter, cylinder head gasket, fuel tank, strainer, engine balancing, camshaft replacement, air conditioning repair and recharging, new tyres, etc.). The only modification for informed enthusiasts is that short springs identical to the 'sportline' versions were fitted when the shock absorbers were replaced, giving the car greater driving precision without compromising comfort.
This 300 CE-24 coupé, which now has a total of just 15, 2800 certified km, is in a condition that is totally incomparable to many others on the market, with a lot of work to be done.
This one is close to faultless, and will satisfy the really demanding Mercedes 124 coupe enthusiast. This is a car built to a level of quality that no longer exists today.
In this condition, it is perfectly collectible and its value is sure to increase.
