Few automobiles occupy the same mythical status as the Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupé. Conceived in 1963 as an aerodynamic experiment for high-speed competition, the original Low Drag was produced in extremely limited numbers, with only a single factory prototype and a handful of period evolutions ever completed. Never offered for sale to the public, it remains one of the most elusive and coveted Jaguars in existence.
The car presented here is not an original Low Drag, but a no-compromise recreation, executed with a level of fidelity, craftsmanship and refinement that places it in a category of its own.
This project required over 3, 000 hours of hand-built work and spanned four years of development, carried out by Retro Roadster (Saint-Germain-de-la-Grange) – a renowned reference in bespoke Jaguar projects – and commissioned by a passionate connoisseur of great engines and authentic driving experiences.
The aluminium bodywork faithfully reproduces the 1963 Low Drag silhouette, rivet by rivet, respecting the proportions, lines and detailing of the original cars. Every panel was shaped with the same obsessive approach, ensuring visual authenticity while meeting modern expectations of finish and precision.
Where this Low Drag truly distinguishes itself is in its philosophy of use. Rather than a pure racing configuration, the interior has been deliberately executed in a GT specification, transforming the car into a refined and usable Grand Touring machine. The result is a low-slung, dramatic coupé capable of long-distance driving, comfort, and mechanical serenity – without sacrificing character.
Following completion, extensive work was devoted to perfecting the driving experience. Each noise was analysed and eliminated, vibrations were meticulously controlled, and every mechanical and tactile detail refined. This was not simply a build, but a continuous pursuit of balance, fluidity, and discreet excellence.
The result is a car that captures the aura of the original Low Drag while offering a far more accomplished and enjoyable ownership experience – a machine that can be driven, appreciated, and admired, rather than merely stored.
