Description
The Porsche 911 has enjoyed enduring success – both in competition and in the showroom – since production began in 1964, thanks to its blend of style, performance and engineering quality. It has been developed into numerous different variants and racked up countless victories in rallying and circuit racing, with early successes including a hat-trick of wins on the Monte-Carlo Rally between 1968 and 1970.
The example being offered for sale here was built in 1983 as a 3-litre SC – a model that had been introduced in 1977 and which was intended to be a ‘last hurrah’ for the 911. Porsche had been planning to phase out its sports car in favour of front-engined models such as the 928, but sales continued to be strong and, in the end, the 911 lived on.
This car was imported from New Jersey to the UK in 2019. Having been bought by the current owner in January 2020, it was then passed to be rebuilt as a long-distance endurance rally for events such as Le Jog with a specification that allows it to be classified in Category H (1972-1976). Works were carried out by Prepfab Motorsport Engineering who have been behind many succesful winning cars along with cars built by them for the McRae family – such as the rally winning “Stobart Escort” driven on the 2006 Roger Albert Clark Rally by Jimmy McRae.
All modifications comply with UK Motorsport regulations and were intended to be period-correct. The flat-six engine was rebuilt as part of the work and now runs on PMO carburettors and MSD electronic ignition, while the bodyshell was strengthened around the suspension mounting points and modified to carry two spare wheels in front no body repairs were needed or carried out. A lightweight boot lid, bonnet and bumpers were fitted to help keep the weight down, and the transmission benefits from a limited-slip differential.
Underbody guards were installed, as well as an FIA fuel tank, and the brake and fuel lines were replaced by Aeroquip hoses and connectors. A new wiring loom was custom-built and an FIA-spec roll cage was fitted, plus a hydraulic fly-off handbrake, Bilstein dampers are installed along with Minilite wheels. Inside, the rear seats were removed and Cobra front seats were installed, along with TRS safety harnesses. A simple look at the presentation of the underbonnet fuse box alone reflects the overall quality of the car.
A gold ‘Carrera’ decal kit provided the finishing touch and the work was complete by the end of 2020. The following year, it was entered for Le Jog and reached the finish in what was a particularly gruelling year for the always-challenging event.
Quick, robust and charismatic, the Porsche 911 has long been a popular choice for historic rallying, and this superbly presented car has been prepared to a very high standard. It was issued with an FIA Historic Regularity Car Pass in January 2023 and is ready to be campaigned in a wide range of events and an excellent competitive choice espescially for any medium or long distance endurance rally.
The car is currently with Rally Preparation Services sister Company, the RPS storage facility and available for inspection.
