Description

Porsche introduced the 928 in 1977 with a clear ambition: to build a grand tourer that could supersede the 911. The formula was unconventional for the brand. A front-mounted V8, a rear transaxle, near-perfect weight distribution, and a body that prioritized refinement over rawness. It found a devoted following among those who valued covering ground swiftly and without drama, and it remained in production for nearly two decades.

The GTS arrived in 1992 as the definitive version. Porsche enlarged the V8 to 5. 4 litres, the largest displacement the 928 ever received, and extracted 350hp and 500Nm of torque from it. On the road that translates to the kind of effortless, immediate pull that only a large naturally aspirated engine provides. Paired with the inherent smoothness of a V8, it remains a deeply satisfying engine to use today, decades after it was designed.

Visually the GTS made its point quietly. Wider rear fenders, 17-inch Cup wheels, and a full-width taillight strip across the tail gave it a slightly more planted, purposeful look than its predecessors. Nothing aggressive, just resolved.

Production ended in 1995 after 2, 904 examples. This car is one of them, and its history is unusually well documented. The MIZWA sticker on the rear glass, the Japan-specific front overfenders, and option code C08 place it firmly as an officially imported Japanese market car, delivered through MIZWA, the organisation responsible for bringing Porsches to Japan during that period. The odometer reads 9, 571km.

That figure is worth pausing on. The 928 was built to be driven, and most were. Finding one with meaningful miles is easy. Finding one with under ten thousand, in the condition this car presents, is something else entirely. The interior is unmarked, the leather tight, the switchgear precise. The paint needs no apology. The underside is clean. The engine bay insulation retains its original finish. Whoever kept this car clearly understood what they had.

The 928 GTS has been quietly appreciating in the collector market for several years now, as attention has shifted beyond air-cooled Porsches toward the later water-cooled cars. The GTS in particular, as the last and most capable of the line, has established itself as a serious collectible. Opportunities to acquire one in this state of preservation do not come around often.
