Lot 72
Property of a deceased's estate
1972 Norton 750cc Commando Interstate
Registration no. JOR 122L
Frame no. 200064 to applied plaque (see text)
Engine no. 200064

The Commando's vibration-beating Isolastic frame enabled Norton Villiers successfully to prolong the life of their ageing parallel twin. Launched in 1967, the Commando used the preceding Featherbed-framed Atlas model's 750cc engine and AMC gearbox, and was an instant hit with the motorcycling public, being voted Motor Cycle News 'Machine of the Year' for five consecutive years. It might have been a little down in top speed compared to rivals such as BSA-Triumph's 750cc triples and Honda's CB750 four, but the Commando more than made up for this minor deficiency with superior mid-range torque and steadier handling.

The Commando 750 offered here is an example of the Interstate variant, readily distinguishable by its five-gallon 'touring' fuel tank, and was a new introduction on the MkIV range for 1972.

According to the accompanying HPI report, this Commando has belonged to the late owner since September 2019 having undergone a change of colour from white to black in March 1979. Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed (the engine turns over). An Alton generator is installed but there is no battery fitted at present. The odometer displays 26, 729 miles. Prospective bidders must satisfy themselves as to the condition, completeness, authenticity and compatibility of this lot's component parts, prior to bidding. It should be noted that the headstock is additionally stamped '00114' and that the left-hand side panel is loosely attached. Additional paperwork includes a current V5C document; a quantity of invoices; a 2016 MoT certificate; and a quantity of SORN confirmations. Offered with two ignition keys.

£4, 000 - 6, 000

All lots are sold ‘as is/ where is’ and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
