In addition to providing Jaguar with much-needed additional manufacturing capacity, its acquisition of Daimler in 1960 also brought the elegant Edward Turner-designed 90-degree 2, 548cc V8. Installing this lightweight hemispherical-head engine in the Mk2 bodyshell enabled Jaguar to create a more exclusive sporting saloon aimed at Daimler’s traditionally conservative clientele. Introduced in 1962, the Daimler 2. 5 V8 featured a distinctive fluted Daimler grille and was initially available only with Borg-Warner three-speed automatic transmission. Like the Mk2, it employed four-wheel disc brakes, independent front suspension and a live rear axle located by a Panhard rod. However, with leather upholstery, spot and fog lamps, a heated rear window and wheel trims fitted as standard, it was notably better equipped. Officially rated at 140bhp and 155lb ft of torque, the Daimler was capable of around 115mph. Considerably rarer than its Jaguar sibling, it also earned a reputation for slightly sweeter handling thanks to the lighter alloy V8’s more favourable weight distribution.
Finished in attractive Opalescent Silver Blue with a grey leather interior, this example is offered as a genuine barn find having reportedly remained off the road and unused for more than a decade. The vendor advises that the car was inherited and, having been in previous ownership for approximately 20 years, is now offered for sale without reserve. Displaying a reputed 59, 145 miles, the Daimler will require complete recommissioning before being returned to the road. The vendor advises that the engine has not been started for many years, and prospective purchasers should assume that mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems will require inspection and overhaul prior to use. The tyres will require replacement before any road use.
Despite its period of storage, the car appears to retain good, solid bodywork and a notably well-preserved interior, making it an appealing restoration candidate. Accompanying the car are its original sales brochure, service handbook, current V5C Registration Document and an additional set of wire wheels supplied without tyres. An increasingly sought-after sporting saloon, this no-reserve Daimler V8 250 presents an excellent opportunity for the enthusiast seeking a rewarding recommissioning or restoration project.
