The MK2 ADO16 was produced between 1967 and 1971. There were no less than six badge alternatives (excluding the 1300 GT) and if this wasn’t complicated enough, a confusing number of changes to individual models. The MG version was first offered as an 1100 in 1962, then 1300 from 1967 with single carburettor. In May 1968 the 1100 option was dropped and shortly after that the 1300 was given twin carburettors. Finally in October 1968 the model was renamed “MG 1300 MK2” and given a significant mechanical makeover. Power was increased to 70bhp with engine and gearbox upgrades close in spec to the Mini Cooper “S” and virtually identical to the incoming 1300GT which also had a quoted top speed of 97mph.
GCC814G is one of those later MG 1300 MK2 cars, registered December 1968. We have sold a few hundred BMC vehicles over the years including half a dozen or so award winning cars that were difficult to fault. This one is by far the best and it’s the third outstanding car that we have handled from the same owner. He bought it in 2023, in superb condition then and one of a vanishingly small number of these cars that has not had body repairs or welding. Since then, an exhaustive level of improvement has taken place and every component deemed to be less than perfect has been refurbished or replaced including various NOS parts. There is far too much detail to list here but suffice to say this process was time consuming and expensive. The result is a car that presents in astonishing condition; as close to perfect as it gets in most areas, better than new in some.
The only deviations from showroom spec a few discreet concessions to modern motoring - Halogen H4 headlights, spin–on oil filter, negative to earth conversion, hazard warning lights, inertia reel belts, electric screen-wash, stainless exhaust, electronic ignition and a complete array of stainless fixings, all carefully carried out without significant alteration to the original appearance.
All of this adds up to a car that is as well sorted and settled as it possibly could be and it drives as well as it looks, which is no small statement.
Cars like this simply don’t appear on the open market; it’s unique and more or less impossible to replicate. Clearly, we are hoping it goes to a good home.
