Commissioned and designed by Ford as a European equivalent to the iconic Mustang, the Capri was launched in 1969. An attractive four-seater with good handling and performance, its reputation was enhanced by the repeated successes of competition variants in the contemporary European Touring Car Championship. Although, stylistically evolved over three ‘Marks’, the handsome two-door coupe was built around a monocoque bodyshell and powered by everything from an anaemic 1. 3-litre four-*** to a homologation special 3. 1-litre V6 engine. The Capri II was launched on 25th February 1974 and was the first Ford to feature a hatchback. By now a well evolved design the model suffered few reliability issues. In October 1976, the only UK plant producing Capris, Ford’s Halewood plant stopped production, and all production of the Capri was moved to the Cologne Body & Assembly factory in Germany. The Mark II and Mark III 3. 0-litre X-pack special performance options pack for the Capri were offered between 1977 and 1980. They used a special glassfibre wide bodykit made by Fibresports, larger ventilated front disc brakes (retaining the standard drums at the rear), Bilstein gas-filled rear dampers and front struts (used with single rear leaf springs), an “anti-dive kit”, a Salisbury limited-slip differential (LSD) and a choice of two performance upgrades for the Essex V6 3-litre engines. These upgrades could only be bought through and fitted by one of the 80 Ford RS Motorsport dealerships in the UK, or a complete new car could be ordered factory equipped through a Ford Motorsport dealer. It is estimated that little over 100 original conversions were made.
This manual transmission Capri II 3-litre Ghia has been period fitted with X-pack upgrades and is now finished in black with a subtle white coachline and original dark grey velour interior which remains in good condition. Purchased by present (and fifth) owner in 1977, it displays a very credible 55, 015 miles.
The history file includes a collection of restoration invoices, owners handbook and original Ford issued RS Capri II Series X specification sheet and Specialised Engines running in sheet (supplied with the upgraded (original) engine and dated November 1982), old MOTs and vendor’s report sheet detailing restoration and upgrades (upgrades understood to have been purchased in November 1979 and are understood to be in line with Ford RS Capri Series X Specification). Hardly used by the vendor since 1998 due to pressures of business but always kept in a dry garage and well maintained, it is considered by him to be in very good condition throughout and benefits from a factory fitted (and operational) steel sunroof.
A well-specified Capri in very good condition, PNN 51M represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a most attractive and well-specified 3-litre Ghia Capri II with period correct upgrades.
