PLEASE NOTE: This lot has been incorrectly catalogued as an SA variant of the Silver Eagle, when in fact it is a TC 16. 95.
Championed by the likes of Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Invicta, six-cylinder engines became synonymous with prestige motoring during the 1920s. Debuting in 1927, the Alvis 14. 75 owed much to the Coventry marque’s existing 12/ 50 four-cylinder model. Based around a robust ladder frame chassis equipped with all-round, semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, the newcomer could be had with a variety of open and closed coachwork. A capacity increase from 1870cc to 2148cc saw the 14. 75 become the 16. 95 during late 1928. Reputedly capable of 80mph, Alvis’s six-cylinder offering was rechristened the Silver Eagle in March 1929 and gained a wider-tracked, lower-slung chassis the following summer.
Built during 1931, this hugely attractive six-cylinder Alvis retains its original Atlantic saloon coachwork by Carbodies, which is unusually clad with mostly Aluminium paneling and a fabric roof. A TC 16. 95 variant, it is fitted with a 2, 148cc engine breathing through triple carburettors that is mated to a close-ratio gearbox with a high-ratio back axle. Much of the history has been lost during a previous ownership period, however it is said to have been completely restored during the 1990’s and has been cherished in private collections since. Our vendor acquired it from a collector in Scotland in 2024 and immediately fitted it with a new clutch acquired from the Alvis register spares department. We are told that it remains sumptuously original, with most of its correct interior remaining in fine original condition and much of the correct external hardware also present.
Now offered for sale as our vendor has another pre-war car project that is now nearly roadworthy and the Alvis is currently taking its garage space; it would be very suitable as a starter post-vintage thoroughbred that is said to be able to out-accelerate 3-Litre Bentleys from a standing start!
