Produced at Velocette’s Hall Green works, the 499cc Venom remained in production from 1955 until 1970. Only 5721 examples were made. Its air-cooled, overhead-valve single-cylinder engine developed approximately 34bhp, giving the model a genuine 100mph capability. Renowned for its engineering quality, purposeful character and sporting performance, the Venom earned a loyal following among discerning motorcyclists. The model’s reputation was further enhanced in 1961, when a specially prepared, fully faired Venom achieved a remarkable feat at the Montlhéry circuit in France. Averaging 100. 05mph over 24 hours, it became the first motorcycle to exceed a 100mph average over the duration of the record attempt — an extraordinary achievement for a 500cc single that remains a defining moment in British motorcycling history. The Venom would subsequently provide the foundation for the celebrated Thruxton, introduced in 1965 as a more competition-focused production machine. The Thruxton went on to win the 1967 Isle of Man Production TT, further cementing Velocette’s standing as one of the great names of the British motorcycle industry. With 22, 485 miles showing on the odometer, this is a well presented example of the marque. Today, the Venom remains a highly regarded machine, appreciated for its combination of traditional engineering, sporting pedigree and unmistakable period character.
