Here for sale we are delighted to offer a real one-off vehicle - this beautiful rebuilt 90.
The "remit" for this build was to create a vehicle which looks very current, yet retains older school mechanics, thus avoiding troublesome ECUs and problematic and costly inherent faults - making it easy to live live and cheap to run long term. This vehicle is quite special in that it is an automatic defender - the controls cleverly hidden within the cubby box. The ultra reliable 200tdi engine has been retained, which virtually guarantees trouble free, high mileage running for years to come. Even though and old school approach to mechanics has been adopted, this has not been done at the expense of either solidity or refinement. The chassis is "like new" and promises to last, and there are many many enhancements listed below which make living with this vehicle much more palatable..... read on!
On the outside, this 90 is painted in a rare, XS colour of Stornoway Grey. Panoramic sides have been fitted to the vehicle, with full tinting, including the rear quarter panels and full alpine lights. An SVX style front end has been fitted, along with LED daytime running lights. The added demands of power have been catered for with the fitment of a new, high performance Optima battery - expensive, but highly capable. A custom made exhaust has been fitted to give maximum power without removing the silencer - so it is quiet at speed. The fuel pump has been tweaked too, so you can really hustle it along with the minimum of effort. A performance air filter helps it breathe, and a kenlowe electric fan aids on the warmest of days! Sawtooth Defender alloys have been fitted with locking wheel nuts and red dust caps. A virtually brand new full set of General Grabber AT2s are fitted - a cross climate tyre which give good off-road ability without sacrificing road holding ability. The vehicle has been lowered to 1 inch below standard, with new shocks and springs which are designed for this, and new brakes are fitted all-round. All this means it really handles - far faster than you'd ever be brave enough to take it into a bend! Side steps are fitted for easy access to the cabin. The brakes are superb too, and give great confidence.
On the inside, this vehicle is like no other 1994 Defender 90 in existence.... the vehicle is fully fitted with correct acoustic matting from Exmoor Trim, along with sound deadening under the bonnet to minimise cabin noise. XS Half Leather heated Seats are fitted, which operate on discreet buttons in the cab. The cubby box provides some cup holders, and hides the gearbox selection whilst providing a storage space too, and an arm rest! Speakers are fitted in the sides of the cubby, with a fully functioning radio with aerial, complete with an auxiliary port for your music device. A bluetooth device also allows you to take calls and stream music to the stereo CD. The headliner is from a 2017 Defender, and is very costly Alcantara leather, with leather sun-visors and interior lights which are fully functioning. OEM floor mats (2017 Variants) are fitted both in the front and rear including the sides to protect the new carpeting. Brand new doors were fitted recently at the cost of over £2000, with roll-down windows and full locking of all doors, front and rear - so there's no rusty frames or flpping panels - no expense has been spared on this vehicle. A smaller steering wheel is fitted to allow elbow room, and is covered in Italian Leather, rather than the plastic variants. A 12v socket is fitted to allow phone charging.
Underneath is really where this vehicle shines, with a recent mild-steel chassis which is completely unwelded and neatly "stonechipped"in black.... its all very nice and completely clean - no mud here! The brakes, shocks and springs are all recent, and the automatic conversion has been done to a high standard.
In summary then, if you are looking for an old school mehanical Defender, but are worried about ECU and electrical issues associated with modern 90s, then this is for you. With old-fashioned engineering but modern luxury, this is the ideal combination between old and new. 'Rita' (as she has been called!) is a real head turner, gets admiring looks wherever she goes, and has proved to be a very reliable machine. She has never failed to start first time.
Please note that the plate on this vehicle is not included within the sale. The vehicle will be returned to its correct age related plate of L131 FSE. As this is a privately owned vehicle, this vehicle does not come with a John Brown 4x4 warranty, but dont let that worry you - it's certainly the nicest 20+ year old 90 (soon eligible for 25 yr old classic motor insurance!) we've ever seen and should give a lifetime of service to its new owner, safe in the knowledge that its been pampered with its former keeper!
Vehicles like this rarely become available - the asking price barely covers the enormous work and effort that has gone into making this early 90 future proof, and capable of being driven comfortably by anyone, with that automatic box, comfortable interior, new chassis and power uprated engine!
