Description
Most classic cars have a certain presence, but very few possess the same presence as the Invicta Type S with its low, spectacular chassis.
It is estimated that only about 1, 000 Invictas of all types were built before the company had to bow out in the autumn of 1933 due to the early-1930s economic depression.
Invicta had existed for less than ten years but had left a far greater mark.
In total, around 75 Type S cars were built, most of which have survived. A testament to Invicta's high build quality.
Regardless, the Type S is a rare bird and seldom seen: with its lowered chassis, the result of moving the rear axle above the chassis rails, few pre-war sports cars shared such a low stance.
The Invicta 1930/ 31 catalogue states:
"The 4½‑litre Invicta sports chassis was produced to meet the demands of that segment of the motoring public who desire a car capable of reaching very high average speeds... we have designed a chassis with a very low centre of gravity, which at the same time provides the correct weight distribution when required to achieve high-speed motoring with safety and comfort... The acceleration and the well-known handling, for which all previous Invicta cars had been famous, are retained in the new sports model, which has a maximum speed of about 100 M. P. H."
The Type S engine was the familiar 4½‑litre six-cylinder engine also used for the Type A. The powerful, robust engine delivers ample torque as a long‑stroke unit and will pull in top gear at under 10 mph, then accelerate to about 90 mph and stay there all day.
Few cars of the era could match the Invicta 4½‑litre for torque and absolute performance.
This particular Invicta underwent a complete restoration in the early 2010s and is based on a 1930 4½‑litre High chassis Tourer with the original chassis number A93 and engine number 7363, i. e. "matching numbers". Exactly as was done at the time, the High chassis was converted to the Type S low‑chassis form.
After the rebuild in the United Kingdom, the Invicta was subsequently sold by Peter Bradfield Ltd in 2013 and imported into Europe where it has remained ever since with the same enthusiastic owner.
Used regularly, albeit sparingly, the Invicta is in impeccable condition and presents superbly in deep blue with a matching leather interior.
This is a sporty Grand Tourer in the best sense of the term, eligible for prestigious events such as the Mille Miglia.
The Invicta is registered with a modern UK V5 and comes with a history file containing some images of the restoration, other Invicta-related documents, and a book about the Invicta founder.
