Description
The Model 90 was Sunbeam’s successful racing model in the 1920s and remained in the catalogue into the early 1930s, offered to privateers as a top‑end model, mainly intended for competition. In 1931, the Model 90 cost 90 pounds sterling, compared with 75 pounds for the Model 9; it was therefore not an ordinary roadster. In 1933, the Model 90 was replaced by the Model 95, marking the end of an era of Sunbeams with twin carburation and 500 cc overhead‑valve heads.
This restoration project of a 1932 Sunbeam Model 90 comes from a long‑standing owner. The chassis and engine numbers match, as evidenced by the older registration documents that accompany the Sunbeam. Other contemporaneous documents indicate that the Sunbeam was imported into Denmark in the 1950s by an English gentleman. The bike then remained laid up from 1956 to 1980, when it changed hands and a restoration was undertaken.
The engine and gearbox have been rebuilt. The frame has been repainted. The wheels have been rebuilt. The motorcycle is 99% complete; only the rear stand, silencers and the speedometer drive are missing. These are original Sunbeam parts. Everything else is present, complete and in very good condition, down to the reversed levers, the original 90‑model‑specific Amal twin‑float carburettor, the bronze Lucas headlamp with a bakelite switch, the original Lucas magneto, etc.
This 1932 Sunbeam Model 90 features a few notable differences from other 90s of the same era: the fuel tank is noticeably larger, as is the oil tank (almost double its capacity), and the latter has its filler neck on the left‑hand side (Manx Tourist Trophy style).
The engine is also fitted with hairpin valve springs and the foot‑operated gear shift is standard. Clearly, this motorcycle was designed for competition and/ or high‑speed road touring.
A charming and simple project, assembled like a complete bicycle and supplied with its 1950s registration document.
