The iconic Ford 1600E was produced and sold in the UK as a 4 door family sports saloon. The production run lasted from 1968 to 1970 and 57, 524 cars were built. However Ford produced 2 door 1600E’s for the European market---- but in nowhere near the numbers of the 4 door version. Only 2749 cars were produced thus making the 2 door version the rarest of all the mark 2 Cortinas---- more so than the Lotus version with 4032 cars built.
A proportion of the 2 door 1600Es produced were made in component form and were assembled in their intended country of use. These kits accounted for 1666 vehicles. The remaining 1083 were fully assembled in Dagenham between January 1969 to July 1970 ----- making them even rarer!
The car on offer is one of them - produced in June 1969 !
This Cortina is in excellent condition with 1 previous owner and roughly 61000 kilometers on the clock, has comprehensive paperwork of past MOT’s, services and repairs dating back to the day of purchase (14th July 1969) - proving it hasn’t rolled over! The car has never been smoked in and is 100% rust free and original. There is no evidence of welding on the car except for the rear silencer. The car was used as a daily driver until 1979 when a new car (a Saab) was purchased as a daily. The Cortina then became the second car and exclusively used, when the weather permitted, to drive to Cortina Club meetings. The Cortina has always lived in the garage - whilst the daily driver stood outside on the drive.
The trained eye will notice a slight different shade in the front wings which were changed in May 1972 as a recall by Ford in Karlstad Sweden free of charge - receipts are available to be scrutinized.
Purists will also notice that the driving lamps have been changed, the original pair were removed and stored. They are available with the car
The car wants to come home before Brexit, after Brexit it will be more expensive to import. It is currently owned by an ex-pat in Sweden, it was previously owned by my wife's deceased relative. We can supply an endless amount of pictures to anyone who is interested.
