EXTERIOR
Surely one of the most iconic road cars ever to be produced the Shelby GT500 is the definitive muscle car, with its long nose, vast intakes and squat rear stance all trademarks of 60’s American motoring. Wearing its original combination of Wimbledon White with Blue decals this example is surely one of the most complete, surviver GT500s in existence; stored by the 2nd owner in 1974 the car remained parked in the same spot until 2016 and so the cars period condition has been almost entirely preserved, with just a few period paint touch-ups to note. Chrome work and trim all appears to be complete and correct on the car, as are the factory fit ‘Firecracker’ sequential tail-lights which are an extremely rare option.
Understandably the car is no garage queen but still remains a very solid example; free from any signs of structural corrosion the largely original paintwork shows some signs of age in the form of surface rust with mean the car could easily be treated and preserved, or equally the ideal candidate for a stunning concourse restoration.
INTERIOR
Mirroring the condition of the exterior, the cabin of the Shelby GT500 is very well specified and shows in highly original condition, retaining incredible details such as the factory mounted door tags and even a production line ticket stuck under the dashboard. Upholstery is a classic black vinyl knit, covering the front bucket seats and optional rear Sport Deck seat, with contrasting wooden veneer throughout.
Factory Shelby details also remain in place, with branded Deluxe seat belts, steering wheel and even the embossed central armrest still present and showing in good condition. The impressive factory options include visibility and interior decor groups, power steering, shoulder harnesses, tilt-away steering wheel, tachometer, trip odometer, and AM radio.
Overall the interior of the car presents incredibly well, with no major signs of wear the only things to note are some fading of the chrome work, veneer and vinyl surfaces due to the cars age.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Size matters for muscle cars, so dropping a 7 litre V8 into a Mustang has to be a good thing. Remaining in this example is the original 428-4V CID police interceptor V8 engine, known as the S-code, with original Holley 4-barrel carbs and factory extra cooling package which produces 360bhp and 459 lb?ft of torque. Paired to the V8 is a C6 Automatic transmission and 3. 50:1 rear axle, creating an impressive set up that Shelby claimed could to launch the GT500 from 0-60mph in just 5. 7 seconds.
Servicing work was carried out in 2018 after the car was rescued from storage and included fitment of a new starter, spark plugs and wires, ignition points, coil, and fuel line. The exhaust system was also replaced from the X-pipe rearward however the replaced parts are available with the vehicle. The car starts and runs currently but is in need of a full mechanical overhaul to drive.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Rounding off the classic muscle car look of the Shelby are the original 15? steel wheels with their dealer fitted Shelby 5 Spoke hubcaps. Sears whitewall tyres sit at each corner and are believed to be the same set from 1974, when the car was last used before being parked up for almost 40 years.
Furthering the list of sought after factory options this car also comes with power steering and power-assisted front disc brakes, making the car a far more approachable and comfortable drive.
HISTORY FILE
Built on 31/ 01/ 1968 this stunning Shelby GT500 was sold by Ed Martin Inc. of Indianapolis, Indiana, to a Mr Harold Brewer, with an original list price of $4, 824 as indicated by the original Shelby order form, and specification confirmed by a Marti Report and original factory build sheet.
In 1974, after 70k+ miles the first owner decided to sell the GT500 and so the car was placed on a used car forecourt in Greenville, Ohio, where the car was sold to the Dillan family who used the car for just a few months. Unfortunately their financial situation changed and the car was returned, under the understanding it could be purchased back at a later date and as such the Shelby was placed into storage. Surprisingly the family never returned and so the Shelby resided in with the dealer, Mr Howard Brewer, who placed the car in separated locked storage unit along with 2 other cars where they was forgotten about after he passed away.
Rumours of the vehicles were passed through the family and local area but the cars remained buried in storage until 2014 when they were re-discovered by Mr Brewer’s niece and nephew, after his wife Betty Brewer produced a box of skeleton keys for the forgotten storage units. All 3 cars remained in place until Mrs Brewer passed away in 2016 and the cars were sold to a well known US car dealer, who was also provided with some crucial photographs of the car in period from children of the Dillan family, the 2nd owners of the Shelby. Thanks to the photographs and stories from the Dillan family the dealer was able to verify many specific details of the car, including the tyres, which remained when it was uncovered in 2016.
Due to the long term storage and exceptional, traceable history of the car it is a true survivor of its time, with over 70k miles covered in the time 6 year period the car was used it presents as a well used but well loved example, with signs of use and paint touch-ups which are believed to have been performed in the early 1970s. Period details, usually erased by time and use are still present on the car, showing grease pencil markings on the fender, buck, and door tags as well as the factory production line ticket which is still stuck underneath the dashboard.
Videos of the car are available showing the car being cleaned, serviced and running shortly after it was found and before it was imported to the UK by the current owner.
Present with the car is the original order form, build sheet, production ticket, US bill of sale, period photographs and 2 sets of keys.
