For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 2 Ragtop in Limestone (1959).
Diesel 2286cc. MOT & Tax Exempt. Heater with front demist. Individual Wiper Motors. Free Wheeling Hubs. Bonnet Mounted Spare. Deluxe Seats. Previously sold by us in 2013. Early Series 2 – just the 751st built. Michelin 750 tyres.
We are delighted to present for sale this early Series 2 Land Rover®, which we previously sold back in 2013. This is presented in the popular and rarely seen Limestone colour scheme (especially in the SWB), with Khaki Canvas and Limestone Wheels.
Externally, there are lots of period features – the bonnet mounted spare, front lifting eyes, wing top mounted mirrors, vintage number plates, rear ‘Land Rover’ mud flaps and rear grabhandles all give a pleasingly vintage finish. The bodywork is also a spray type finish, rather than a brush job, which is uncommon to see at this price point and good news for a prospective customer – it does have a patinated look, which we think suits the vehicle well and also means that we are able to keep this vehicle at a more accessible price point for those with a smaller budget. There are some useful modern additions, such as the towball and electrics to allow towing.
On the inside, there are 3 deluxe front seats, with deluxe matting to the footwells. It is great to see that several of the original early features survive – the twist type front vents and the individual wiper motors are both where they should be – and there are two wipers, an option in 1959! The other optional extra is the heater, with front demist – a very handy option which is useful for cold days and defrosting in the winter. There is a handy fire extingusher fitted in the passenger footwell, should this ever be required. The rear is unfitted, but could house bench seats on request to increase capacity to seven occupants including the driver. There is a load mat to the rear floor and the tailgate chains are fitted with covers to protect against damaging the interior bodywork and paint.
Out on the road, this old girl delivers a pleasing period drive, aided by the free wheeling hubs to increase fuel economy and reduce front axle wearing. It starts with minimal glow and runs with no smoke – and it is sprightly for a period diesel unit, giving the best account of this drivetrain that is possible in a 63 year old vehicle, aided by the larger tyres to increase cruising ability. Due to the rarity of this colour scheme, we enjoyed many waves and glances as we drove through the town centre.
In summary, if you are looking for an early Land Rover® Series 2 which benefits from MOT & Tax Exemption, as well as classic insurance, then this could be for you. With the potential for long-term cost effective ownership and the epitome of Classic Land Rover® vintage cool, this should prove to be an investment for the future that you can enjoy today.
