The success of the R Type Continental between 1952 and 1955 lead to the creation of the S1 Continental chassis, which was released in April of 1955. For the first time Bentley enthusiasts had a greater choice of coachwork designs to choose from. The vast majority of coachbuilt bodies at this time were produced by H. J. Mulliner in Chiswick, by Park Ward in Willesden and in comparatively fewer numbers, by James Young in Bromley.
Chassis No BC17DJ which we are currently offering for sale is one of James Youngs beautiful offerings from the period. It was built to Design No CT29 with four door, four light coachwork to rival the Flying Spur design by H. J. Mulliner. It was sparingly built with this particular car being the fourth of only thirteen built in right hand drive to this design on the S1 Continental chassis.
It was originally completed in February of 1958, finished in green with a beige leather interior and shown at the Geneva Car Show on the James Young stand. Upon its return to the UK later in the year it was supplied by Jack Barclay Ltd to its first owner, Delapena & Son Ltd of Cheltenham. Chassis No BC17DJ then changed hands a few times early in its life, when purchased by Captain E. W. Bailey of Andoversford in May 1959, Alex Cowled Ltd of London in June of 1960 and Mr J. F. Robinson of Bristol later in 1960.
During the 1970’s it was purchased by a Mr M Millyard of Sussex, with extensive records in the history files documenting his ownership and the maintenance and improvements to the car he instructed.
In 1986 it was acquired by Mr J King of Harlow in Essex who instructed an extensive restoration in 1991. Works over several years included a bare metal repaint, a complete re-trim and a detailed mechanical overhaul so the car could be used on long distance tours of Europe. The works carried out then still look superb many years later.
The present owners acquired Chassis No BC17DJ in 2009 and have maintained the car to a high standard during this time, with detailed records available in the car’s history file. It is fitted with period style dashboard air conditioning and colour matched seatbelts, making it an ideal car for long distance touring.
Chassis No BC17DJ is a beautiful late specification example with factory power steering and a car which we are delighted to be able to offer for sale at this time.
