The first Dutch importer of the brand, Mr. Ben Pon, based in Amersfoort, was the inventor of this exceptional vehicle, which enjoyed outstanding commercial success. His idea was to build a light commercial vehicle based on the "Beetle", launched in 1945 and christened "Type 1". Its simple, uncluttered lines are characterized by large, smooth surfaces and a V-shaped motif, which forms the band underlining the beltline. Glass-globe-covered headlamps give the Combi a family resemblance to the Beetle and Porsche 356.
The car on display is the most desirable version of the Volkswagen Combi. It's the Type 1 "Samba Bus" version, modified and fitted with twenty-three "Safari"-type glass openings, a large sunroof, double roof rack and side ladder. This Combi was professionally restored ten years ago and has been driven very little since. Its sashes are perfectly aligned, and all used bodywork components have been replaced by new ones, including floorboards, wheel arches and crossmembers. The engine and peripherals were rebuilt in 2023, as were the gearbox, clutch and brakes. The upholstery is also completely new, as are the electrical system, windows and all the lanterns. It is equipped with a large sunroof, two roof racks and a side ladder. With its perfect combination of exterior colors and elegant interior, this Combi is the perfect embodiment of "Vanning", the new craze for outdoor living and family excursions.
