Description
An exceptional opportunity to acquire a rare and authentic 1973 Ford Escort Mexico, built by Ford’s Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) at Aveley. This Mk1 Mexico boasts historic provenance, including multiple top-ten finishes at Ford AVO National Day events, and a prestigious 2nd place award in 2013. With only seven owners from new and a remarkable history file, this vehicle represents one of the finest surviving examples of its kind.
Presented in its original Diamond White, this Mexico impresses with outstanding attention to detail, extending from the engine bay to the underside. Correct AVO enhancements are visible throughout, including the distinctive flared arches, strengthened chassis and flitch plates, and reinforced suspension mounts. Chrome, glass, and trim are all in excellent condition, with much of the glass still etched with the registration number. Minor aging to the window rubbers adds character without detracting from the car’s show-level presentation.
Retaining its factory-correct Custom Pack interior, this example features RS contoured front seats in brushed nylon with optional headrests, a spotless loop pile carpet, and the rare RS centre console complete with the original Kienzle clock. Subtle refinements throughout, including restored door mechanisms and meticulously refurbished components, showcase the owner’s commitment to authenticity. Only the varnished wood dash trim shows slight fading in an otherwise pristine interior. The boot area is equally impressive, complete with unused tools and a genuine, unmarked boot mat—virtually impossible to source today.
Under the bonnet lies the original GT 711M crossflow engine, rebuilt to a high 110 Spec by the renowned Vulcan Engineering. The head has been converted for unleaded fuel, and a host of period-correct components—including the Fomoco radiator and proper dipstick bracket—remain in place. Performance is true to the original spec, delivering 85bhp, 0-60mph in 10. 7 seconds, and a top speed exceeding 100mph. The 4-speed synchromesh gearbox was professionally rebuilt by BGH Geartech Ltd and is paired with an AP heavy-duty clutch for smooth, precise shifts.
Riding on original 5. 5x13in sculptured steel wheels in Silver Fox with stainless hubcaps, this Mexico is fitted with new Michelin 165 HR13 tyres. Optional period-correct Minilite Sport Alloys are available by separate negotiation. Braking is handled via a vacuum servo-assisted system with M16 front calipers and Lockheed 9” rears, retaining the original single-line setup for true driving character.
First registered in July 1973, this vehicle was the 50th Mexico added to the AVO Owners Club register. A comprehensive history file includes MOTs, invoices, and restoration records spanning decades, including a 14-week engine rebuild featured in the AVO club magazine HAVOC, and a full bare-metal respray in 2002. Original handbooks, Ford Sure wallet, spare keys, and a digital archive of detailed restoration photos are all included.
This is an exceptional and meticulously preserved example of a true British performance icon. With its authentic AVO credentials, award-winning show pedigree, and an extraordinary level of detail throughout, this Ford Escort Mexico offers both investment potential and sheer enjoyment for collectors and enthusiasts alike. A rare opportunity to own one of the best.
