Description

This superb and rare Pininfarina short-chassis cabriolet was sold in Prague when new - see our website for more photos. Not only is this a very early example with rare original all-alloy bodywork, but also special bodywork details made for the first owner. The photos in the file from its early days show the rarity and originality of the bodywork. It arrived in the United States in the early 1950s, where it was owned by Alec Uhlmann, among others. We also have photos dating from the late 1960s, when it was in the United States and being prepared for restoration. In the early 90's it was fully restored and sold to a Belgian collector who took great care of it. When the car arrived in the Netherlands it was fitted with a mismatched (unnumbered) engine which was replaced by another correct SS engine. The previous owner had the engine rebuilt by the excellent mechanics at Mugello Engineering. We then sold the car to the current owner. Since then, the car has competed in the 2022 and 2023 Mille Miglia with the rebuilt mechanicals and is accepted in the Mille Miglia Registro (eligible). Few cars rival the elegance and racing lineage of the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500. The 6C 2500 became one of the most expensive and refined cars of its time, attracting a celebrity clientele from all over the world, in particular fans of the highly desirable top-of-the-range Super Sport cabriolet. This superb 1948 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Pininfarina cabriolet should be the subject of a tempting offer. Please ask for Tel +31 the details below and feel free to request further photos if required. Model History For Alfa Romeo, the 6C 2500 was the swan song of its era. When it debuted in 1939 as the third series of Vittorio Jano's legendary in-line six-cylinder Alfas, the engineers involved could never have imagined that it would mark the end of the line for hand-built Alfa Romeos. Thanks to engine improvements and a vastly improved fuel system, the 6C 2500 was the first road-going Alfa Romeo capable of reaching 160 km/ h. It also had four-wheel independent suspension, with parallel arms and coil springs at the front and oscillating axles with torsion bars at the rear. The 6C 2500 was an instant hit with its select, upmarket clientele. Alfa Romeo of course continued to supply rolling chassis to coachbuilders even as war threatened, and the outbreak of war in Europe limited production of the 6C 2500 to just a few hundred units during the years of conflict. However, at the end of the war, the 6C 2500 offered Alfa Romeo the opportunity to relaunch its manufacturing efforts by returning to its advanced pre-war design. The first project created after the end of the war was the factory-proposed 6C 2500 Freccia d'Oro, which had essentially the same running gear as the pre-war 6C 2500's. As Alfa's post-war cars followed pre-war practices, so did the bodywork by Pinin Farina of Turin, although the obsession with art deco had faded somewhat. As a result, post-war coachwork was stripped of much of its shiny elements, allowing its beautiful lines to stand on their own.
