Alfa Romeo’s legendary 6C series, produced from 1927 to 1954, stands among the most revered in pre-war motoring history. The “6C” name refers to its straight-six engine—echoing the famous “8C” with its eight-cylinder sibling. Engine displacements evolved throughout production, from 1500cc to the final 2500cc variants, running parallel to Alfa’s celebrated 8C 2300 and 2900 racing models.
Introduced in 1934, the 6C 2300 featured a newly designed, integrally cast 2, 309cc engine with an alloy cylinder head. It quickly proved its racing pedigree, finishing 2nd, 4th, and 5th in the inaugural Giro d’Italia – Coppa d’Oro del Littorio, a grueling 5, 687 km endurance race.
Like many pre-war Alfas, the 6C 2300 chassis was sent to coachbuilders for bespoke bodywork. Bodies from Zagato, Touring Superleggera, Castagna and others graced these chassis, each offering unique character and craftsmanship.
THE CAR ON OFFER
Originally built as a 1934 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Worblaufen Cabriolet, this example was sourced in 2011 by a leading Alfa expert from Switzerland, specifically as a restoration candidate. Under the guidance of renowned pre-war Alfa specialist Neil Twyman it was transformed into a stunning Monza-style open two-seater, completed over two years.
The original four-door cabriolet body was removed (which is retained and included in the sale), with its chassis modified to fit a bespoke handcrafted aluminium body, faithful to Alfa’s racing heritage. The engine and gearbox were fully rebuilt, including close-ratio gearing, and the car was finished in Rosso Alfa with period-correct details such as fly screens, foldable windscreen, vintage gauges, and leather-trimmed interior.
Further enhancing the performance, the current owner later commissioned Setford & Company to build and install a powerful 2600cc engine, now fitted to the car. The original matching-numbers engine is included separately with the sale.
