Description

History of the BMW E9 Coupé

The BMW E9 is without a doubt one of the most significant classics in automotive history, representing to this day the perfect blend of elegance and performance. Its first major appearance came in 1968 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, when the 2800 CS was unveiled – a model that laid the foundation for the later success of the E9 series. The introduction of the 3. 0 CSI in autumn 1971 marked the breakthrough of the coupé, setting new standards with its fuel injection system and an impressive 200 hp.
The E9’s design is a prime example of stylish automotive aesthetics. The long hood, sleek lines, and dynamic silhouette give the 3. 0 CSI a striking road presence. Particularly iconic is the so-called "Hofmeister kink" on the C-pillar, named after BMW designer Wilhelm Hofmeister. At the same time, Italian influences are undeniable: this design element already appeared on the BMW 3200 CS, styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time at Bertone. This stylistic fusion gives the E9 a graceful lightness that sets it apart from its contemporaries.
Yet the E9 impresses not only with its looks. Under the hood, a powerful 3. 0-liter inline-six engine delivers dynamic performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/ h takes well under eight seconds – an outstanding figure that ensures a spirited yet comfortable driving experience both on highways and winding back roads.
The E9 also made a name for itself in motorsport. It served as the foundation for many successful racing cars built by BMW Motorsport during the 1970s, setting new benchmarks in competition. The combination of technical refinement and aesthetic elegance made the 3. 0 CSI one of the most sought-after classics of its era.
Only 8, 144 units of the 3. 0 CSI were produced, making it a highly coveted collector’s item today. Anyone fortunate enough to take the wheel of this coupé experiences the charm of a bygone automotive era that has lost none of its magic. The BMW E9 3. 0 CSI remains a timeless symbol of style, innovation, and driving pleasure – a masterpiece that continues to inspire generations of car enthusiasts.

History of the BMW 3. 0 CSi -SSC-623 offered here

The BMW 3. 0 CSi, VIN 22635xx, was ordered on July 25, 1972, by Dr. Ludwig M. from Oberursel through the BMW dealership Friedel & Zervas in Frankfurt. It was specified in the rare color Inka (022) with a black interior. According to our research, only 11 BMW 3. 0 CSis were ever ordered in Inka. Additional options ordered included: electric front windows, a second exterior mirror, a radio with an automatic antenna, and 3-point safety belts.
On October 12, 1972, the vehicle was completed, the corresponding invoice was issued, and shortly thereafter it was registered under the license plate HG-V 500. Until 1985, Dr. M. kept every single service and repair receipt, no matter how small.
In 2010, Eric Bunte, founder of the legendary German Exclusive in the Netherlands, acquired this exceptional CSi to restore it according to its original delivery specification and add it to his private collection. The entire bodywork was professionally and meticulously restored and repainted in its original delivery color.
Due to time and capacity constraints, Scuderia Sportiva Colonia was commissioned to complete the vehicle. The current photos are evidence of this. In addition to the original soundproofing mats, Scuderia also installed additional insulation fleece for noise reduction. The plastic-coated body trim strips are currently being polished to a high gloss.
Please note: The new owner still has the option to choose various equipment details. For example:
• Seats upholstered in original black velour or, upon special request, in black leather
• Original 4-speed gearbox or 5-speed overdrive transmission
• Original restored engine with 200 hp, or a discreetly tuned version with programmable injection and electronic ignition producing 240 hp
• Choice of wheel sets: 14" Pedrini with chrome center caps or 16" Alpina replicas
There are virtually no limits to individual customization wishes.
In short: A perfect, like-new BMW 3. 0 CSi in one of the rarest, most elegant yet sportiest color combinations is being completed by us according to the wishes of its new owner. After completion, this vehicle must be run in according to factory guidelines. We also offer a one-year warranty, provided all required service work is carried out at our facility.

Summary
Scuderia Sportiva Colonia has placed special emphasis on these technically sophisticated coupés. With their stunning design, outstanding chassis, excellent brakes, and powerful engine, they were – in the early 1970s – the benchmark in their class. The BMW slogan "Sheer Driving Pleasure" comes alive in the BMW E9 in a unique and unmistakable way.
The interior pampers the owner with luxurious materials, the seats are very comfortable with acceptable lateral support, and the individually framed VDO round instruments are hard to beat in terms of elegance. One car journalist put it perfectly: "If James Bond had been German, he would have chosen a BMW E9 as his company car," and he surely would have appreciated the standard power steering in the CSi.
And if you don’t like the color or the installed options: we currently have more than 10 additional BMW E9s under restoration, where each potential buyer can choose their preferred original BMW color as well as the equipment and options to be installed. For each vehicle, we are happy to prepare a customized offer including a list of options – available upon request.

Note:
We offer a 1-year warranty on all work carried out. The basic condition is that all necessary service work is performed either by us or by a service partner selected by us. The odometer will be reset to 0 km upon completion of the restoration, as this BMW will be starting its second life.
This offer is non-binding and subject to prior sale. In Germany, we provide full support including new TÜV certification and classic car registration (H license plate). If needed, we can arrange a new professional valuation report. Within Europe, we offer enclosed trailer transport, and for the rest of the world we can arrange container shipping.
The vehicle offered here is located at the restoration workshop of our sister company Scuderia Sportiva Servizio in Dortmund. In the former Arnold Jung locomotive depot, you’ll find a wide selection of exciting, sporty classics.
