Entered from the estate of the late Peter Macey
A handsome British-market machine, part of the collection since 1988
Highly original with great potential for an ‘oily rag’ recommissioning project
Studebaker, a long-established South Bend wagon maker, moved into cars in the early 1900s and by 1911 had become the Studebaker Corporation. After introducing its first mass-produced six-cylinder in 1913, Studebaker phased out fours by 1920. The 1926 Model ER exemplified their modern construction: a six-cylinder, side-valve 242ci (four-litre) engine with four main bearings producing 50 bhp at 2, 200 rpm, three-speed manual transmission with shaft drive, four-wheel brakes, electric starting and lighting, and a sturdy steel chassis. It was offered in several body styles (including touring, sedan and coupé) and aimed at the dependable mid-priced market.
Although Studebaker traded in Britain for many years during the ’20s and ’30s, British-market machines are almost extinct. As of 1925, the firm had its British headquarters on Pound Lane, Willesden, and showrooms at 117-123, Great Portland Street, but by 1928 it had consolidated itself into a single, central showroom and service station at Glasgow Terrace, Grosvenor Road, London, SW1. Buyers of a Standard Six in 1925 were enticed by the “Vibrationless engine… full size balloon tyres… hydraulic four-wheel brakes… sun-glare screen, mechanical screen wiper…” and more, with the Touring Saloon at £395 and the Coachbuilt Saloon at £520.
This delightful Roadster was registered on May 23rd, 1928, and by October, 1961, it was painted Green and Black paint and belonged to Barry Edward Davie of the Old King’s Head, Ingatestone, Essex. It then spent many years off the road, but Mr. Macey had purchased and registered it by 1988. He did not use it on the road, however, so it remains for the next owner to recommission it and drive it for perhaps the first time in sixty-five years. Fully deserving of an ‘oily rag’ recommissioning, it is supplied with a V5, an old green logbook, a Standard Six Owner’s Manual, and a photograph dated 1987.
