An exciting and highly worthwhile running and driving recommissioning project
When the Klaus Kapitza-designed 8 Series was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989, it felt like a glimpse into the future with its angular styling. An upmarket range with superior performance and a price tag to match, the 8 Series was designed to be a standalone premium model, although seen to be the successor to the 6 Series. The 8 Series was offered in 830i, 840Ci and 850i/ Ci form and, when introduced in mid-1993, it was fitted with a four-litre V8 engine mated to either a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. Producing a very healthy 282bhp, this version could achieve the 0-62mph sprint in an impressive 6. 9 seconds; importantly with the naturally aspirated V8, acceleration was effortless and refined. Over $1 billion dollars are said to have been spent on the car’s design with CAD design and wind tunnel technology. From mid-1995, production phased in the newer 4. 4-litre M62B44 engine, the 4. 4 Sport offered a better driving experience with considerably more torque.
A beautiful sight in its sparkling Calypso Red Metallic, this BMW 840 Ci is presented as a well-preserved and very worthwhile project for recommissioning. Registered new in Reading on November 23rd, 1994, it has had just five registered keepers from new, including two long-term owners this century. The fourth keeper owned it from 2000 to 2012, and the present registered keeper has had it ever since. It appears to have been in continuous use throughout its life until 2014, when it was taken off the road. In 2013, it passed its MOT at 80, 366 miles with no advisories, but since then it has been in storage and will require the usual checks and recommissioning work before it can be used again. Having seen such little use of late, the paintwork and interior are believed mostly original.
The BMW 8 Series is very much a rising star in the burgeoning “Youngtimer” movement, and examples are now being accepted into concours events and are especially welcome at RADwood, the premier 1980s and ’90s motoring lifestyle weekend. This example is supplied with the original book pack, although the service book is absent.
