In October 1994, the XJ 40 series was discontinued after 8 highly successful years of production, and its successor arrived.
Development began as early as 1973 and pursued the goal of staying true to conventional Jaguar styling: classical proportions, combined with traditional craftsmanship (wood, metal, leather as materials). The XJ40 continued the traditional design of its predecessors, interpreted in a modern way, thanks to its proportions, the clean side line and the "hip swing".
Particularly in the field of vehicle electronics, the XJ 40 was one of the most technically ambitious cars of the eighties. The XJ40 received the AJ6 six-cylinder in-line engine made of light alloy, known from the XJ-S, with 3. 6 to 4. 0 litres displacement, and the sensational, extremely smooth-running V12 engine with initially 5. 3 litres and in the last two production years the enlarged 6. 0 litre V12, as in this extraordinary example.
A new styling element introduced with the XJ40 was the J-Gate automatic transmission, which was extremely practical to operate and unique at the time, featuring a separate gate for manual gear selection. The XJ40 was a major market success for Jaguar. No large Jaguar saloon could achieve such high sales figures in a year as the XJ40 did in the early period of its production.
The pinnacle was the luxury variant Daimler Double Six Majestic LWB. Hand-painted and equipped with extremely high-quality materials, like this special example.
