Norton was founded by James Lansdowne Norton in Birmingham in 1898 and began building motorcycles with French and Swiss engines in 1902. In 1907, a Norton with a Peugeot engine won the first Isle of Man TT race, starting a long tradition of sporting excellence. The marque became especially celebrated post-war for the excellent handling of its Featherbed frame, initially developed for the Manx Norton racers.
Launched in 1952, the Dominator 88 was a landmark Norton, being the first road bike to feature the Featherbed frame in conjunction with Roadholder forks and the Bert Hopwood-designed 497cc vertical twin from the Model 7. The Model 99 joined the range in 1955 with a 597cc engine, which was said to produce 31bhp with a 7. 4:1 compression ratio, reputedly enough to “crack the ton.” Handling improved even more with the introduction of the “Slimline” Featherbed frame in 1960, but the Model 99’s retirement was announced in 1962.
This very late production 1963 Norton Dominator 99 was purchased by the previous registered keeper in 2003 as a complete machine needing some restoration. The current keeper acquired the bike in 2010, intending to finish the restoration with his son, and they undertook the work to a high standard. Sadly, the son never rode the Norton and its last outing on the road was in 2019. In storage since, it has occasionally been started to keep the oil circulating and the vendor describes it as “good” in all areas, but it will require recommissioning before it is ridden again. This charming “Dommie” is supplied with the current V5C and some invoices for parts from Norvin.
