Here for sale we have a 1985 Range Rover Classic Vogue EFI, one of the first of its kind, the first year of the introduction of the EFI system and the beginning of the Vogue spec.
Back in the early 80s all Range Rovers were carburetor fed, standard 3. 5 Rover V8 with Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and a manual LT95 4 speed gearbox.
As times moved on, so did the Range Rover, new features were being added almost every year to make the ride as comfortable and refined as possible.
The introduction of the “in vogue” models, automatic gearbox, interior and exterior packs, were only the beginning.
Known as the transition year, 1984 and 1985 were full of surprises.

Introduction of the EFI system on the Rover V8 engine, standard on Vogue models only.
- Front spoiler with driving lamps added to the front on Vogue EFI models, still combined with the alloy vertical grill and headlight surrounds.
- Side rubber stripes with aluminum silver color in the middle all around
- Alloy 3 spoke wheels standard
- Rear view mirrors are electric with demisting ability
- Electric windows standard
- Front headlamp wash jets on bumper
- Door puddle lights
- Armrests to all seats, rear seat with an unique headrest set-up
- Radio cassette player is standard
- Polished Rosewood door trims
- Loadspace carpet and cover
This example we have for sale, is chassis SALLHAML4CA166734,
Was built late 1985 (between November and December).
It is a matching numbers vehicle, still with the original 3. 5EFI plugged to the rare optional extra, the ZF 4speed automatic gearbox.
I believe the original color is Cypress Green.
Good points:
It still retains the most part of its original features,
- has standard Air Conditioning,
- the interior trim although not perfect, its all present and accounted for,
- side rubber finishers are all there,
- the lower tailgate is the original one with the external opening latch (now with license plate fold down plate deleted),
- front indicators are present and still the original metal fixing type,
- has a solid chassis and mostly solid body, was imported in 1998 from Germany,
- door mirrors are correct, the interior is all correct but it will need work
- front wings still original (correct side indicator position), same for the rest of the panels, doors etc
Now for the bad part:
Sadly this Range Rover hasn’t moved in more than 10 years, although it was running before, we haven’t started it, but im sure it would start (we would rather leave this to the buyer who decides to take the Range Rover on).
- Its missing the front spoiler and the front grill with the headlight alloy surround set up,
- it needs body work (nothing too serious), sills and rear crossmember, front inner wings and footwells, the usual bits, its not too far gone (before you ask).
- Rear lights are pretty damaged, will need new lenses which are hard to source,
- Original alloy wheels are missing,
- Interior, needs doing,
So to sum it up,
This is one of the very first EFI models, probably one of the oldest to survive, specially in LHD, very original all around, needs a complete restoration, its not too hard and parts are easily acquired as many of these were scrapped, a highly collectable version if done properly, sad to see it go as I intended to do it myself.
