The Austin-Healey BN6 is an iconic version of the “Big Healey” range, produced between 1958 and 1959. Here are its main features and its history:
History and positioning:
The BN6 is the two-seat version of the Austin-Healey 100-6, succeeding the BN4 (2+2 seats). It was designed to meet the demand from customers wishing for a lighter, sportier car without the rear seats.
It was produced for only two years, making it a rare model highly sought after by collectors.
The BN6 shares its 2. 6-litre inline-six engine with the BN4, but its shorter wheelbase and lower body give it a sportier look and better handling.
Technical specifications:
Engine: Straight-six BMC Series C, 2, 639 cm³, 117 bhp (86 kW) at 4, 500 rpm, fed by two SU carburettors.
Transmission: 4-speed manual gearbox (overdrive optional), rear-wheel drive.
Performance: Top speed 167 km/ h, 0-100 km/ h in 10. 7 seconds.
Chassis: Short wheelbase, coil-sprung suspension, drum brakes on all four wheels (discs at the front on later models).
Design: Elegant lines typical of 1950s British roadsters, with an oval grille, retractable headlights and a canvas hood.
Production and rarity:
The BN6 was produced in limited numbers (around 1, 500 units), making it rarer than the BN4.
It marked the end of the 100-6 series, ahead of the arrival of the Austin-Healey 3000.
