The Appeal
Perhaps no car has garnered such a strong customisation scene as the Volkswagen Beetle. Few cars have captured the hearts of so many, and the air-cooled flat-four's characteristic thrum remains one of motoring's most recognisable sounds. This 1973 example has been backdated to evoke the style of the 1960s cars, finished in period-correct 1968 VW Jade Green with early-style wings, lights and deck lid: a thoughtful restomod that blends classic aesthetics with modern touches. The customisation is so extensive, it feels almost wrong to still call it a 'GT Beetle' - the model it started life as.
Purchased as a stalled restoration project in 2020, every part of the car was removed, cleaned and painted before refitting. The bodyshell was stripped bare, with new panels, including door skins, fitted to eliminate rust, and the entire lower 12 inches of the car replaced with new metal. Raptor coating, colour-matched to the Jade Green, was applied to the wheel wells, heater channels and front apron for long-term protection. The interior was completely refreshed with new carpets, seat upholstery and a tartan headlining that matches the external stripe decal, while the original GT Beetle gearstick and centre console were retained.
Mechanically, the car has been treated to a similarly thorough overhaul. The suspension was replaced with an Evaresto manual air ride system front and rear, the brakes were fully renewed, and a refreshed 1,641cc engine was fitted earlier this year, complete with a Vintage Speed stainless steel exhaust. The vendor states that the car starts and runs well, and is good fun to drive. Having covered fewer than 1,000 miles since completion, it has been trailered to numerous shows, picking up various awards including Best Home Build at Skeg Vegas in 2024. Affectionately named 'Bella' by the owner's family, it is offered for sale as the vendor is moving house and currently lacks storage at the new property.image.png1.47 MB
