The Appeal

For those fascinated by automotive engineering and design, a Citroën DS is certain to pique your interest. Launched in 1955, the DS pioneered the use of hydraulics, aerodynamics and front-wheel drive, resulting in a car that was as joyous to use as it was to look at.
Here we have a top-of-the-range example, dating from the end of the DS’ two-decade production run. Boasting electronic fuel injection, a four-speed semi-automatic gearbox and ‘Pallas’ trim, this was the final and most advanced evolution of the DS before the introduction of the CX the same year.
Imported to the UK in 1998, this Citroën was the vendor’s everyday car for several years before it entered storage around 25 years ago. It had undergone an extensive overhaul of the mechanicals and Hydropneumatic system, with newly regassed spheres and replacement pipework, so the vendor recalls that it drove very well at the time. Since then, the body panels were removed, refinished and finally returned to the car in November 2023. The engine still turns over, although the vendor has not attempted to start it with the old fuel in the tank.
For DS fans seeking a restoration project, this DS23 Pallas would be an excellent candidate.

The History and Paperwork

  • UK registered since the 1st October 1998
  • Left-hand drive
  • The vendor daily-drove the car before it entered storage
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • In dry storage for the past 25 years

The Condition

  • The body panels were unbolted, restored and refinished some years ago
  • In November 2023, the panels were refitted
  • Brand-new carpet and door card set included (not fitted)
  • The bodywork looks in good overall condition and is commendably straight
  • There are now some paint blemishes on the wing, but nothing excessive
  • While lightly dented and pitted, the chrome trims are well-preserved and eminently serviceable
  • Spare bumpers (in good condition) are supplied
  • The underside will require restoration work and as the car hasn’t been moved it’s challenging to asses its condition thoroughly
  • There is some corrosion to the car’s inner structure, as is visible with the boot open
  • The upholstery is now in poor condition but looks largely complete
  • The dashboard and controls continue to present well for their age

The Mechanics

  • 2,347 cc four-cylinder petrol engine with EFI
  • Four-speed semi-automatic gearbox
  • Before it entered storage, the Hydropneumatic system was professionally overhauled, with the spheres regassed and much of the pipework renewed
  • The vendor states that it ran well and operated correctly prior to entering storage
  • No attempt has been made to start the car as the petrol is very old
  • We’re informed that the engine still spins over freely by hand
