History of the Land Rover
The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few. In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The Defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the Defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.
The Car
The vehicle passed a CT French technical test in February 2020. Before that It hadn't been off the road since 2009. Its a 3 owner vehicle with the first owner selling the vehicle on 20/ 06/ 1996 and the current owner acquiring on 03/ 16/ 2009 and ownering for the past 11 years. The previous owner with tenure between 1996 and 2009 used the vehicle for forestry work around Châteauroux, France as such the vehicle has received little mileage, however the bed had been well used. We have now refinish the bed in a raptor lining.
We hold maintenance and service records for the vehicle dating back to early 2008. These stand at a total of: €4, 179 The majority of this work was conducted locally by One Land 4x4.
The vehicle was repatriated back to the UK in early March. And we set about doing a sympathetic refurbishment of the vehicle.
This has included the following to date:
Exterior:
Replace front side turn signals
Repair rear brake lights
Repair rear turn signals
Replace both driver and passenger door handles
Repace bonnet latch interior handle and cable
Mudflats all round for 110 HCPU
Replace windshield seal
Replace and paint door hinges and stainless steel bolt kit
Replace Wheel rubber hup caps 4
Rewire trailer hitch wiring
New front bumper
Front Bumper Fitting Kit with Stainless Steel Bolts
Repair bed gate latch, possible part missing, also bolt missing from tailgate hinge.
New wing mirrors and arms both sides
Repair wipers and washer jets
Replace fuel filler bed cover
Underseal chassis and rear cross member and apply Bedliner in Raptor finish
Interior:
New door cards and door handle trim and look into door latch mechanism on both sides
Repair dash binnacle
New rear view mirror
Mechanical:
New oil breather pipe to airbox
New turbo pipe to air box
New Turbo to turbo valve pipe
New battery
Investigate the steering box. possible rebuild
New rear exhaust section
Full-service oils, all fitters and axel oils, drain & replace coolant.
Look over brakes and wheel bearings for any play replacement where necessary.
